How long does it take to unmap a domain?

  Hi. 6 days ago a client of mine tried to set up a WordPress website but accidentally mapped his personal domain name to another existing WordPress account (long story). We immediately cancelled it.
  But now when we attempt to set the new website up and enter the personal domain name it still says, “This domain was recently in use by someone else and is not available to map yet. Please try again later or contact support.” And “Sorry, there was a problem processing your request. Please try again in a few minutes.”
  I’ve seen in other forums that it can take anywhere from 24-72hrs… but not 6 days. Any insight? We’re at a standstill until this gets resolved. Thanks.

  Hi there,

  When domain mapping is cancelled, the domain can be mapped again two weeks after the cancellation date.

  Which domain was mapped? If the owner of the domain mapping upgrade can confirm they no longer need mapping, we can add it manually. They can post here in this thread to confirm.

  Hi Gemma. Thanks for your answer! The domain is drsjovold.com.
  My client still needs to set up a premium account (which we were trying to do when our mix up happened). Is it possible to add the domain manually considering we don’t have an account yet?
  If not, can we set up a free website so we can get started on our end and then map the domain once it becomes available?
  What would you suggest?

  Hi there,

  If the domain was previously mapped by a different user, you will be able to map it again two weeks after domain mapping was cancelled. This is why you are seeing a message saying that the domain was recently in use by someone else.

  If not, can we set up a free website so we can get started on our end and then map the domain once it becomes available?

  Absolutely! You can choose a free WordPress.com address and start working on the site — then add domain mapping at a later date. In case you need them, there are instructions for mapping a domain here:

  You will need a paid WordPress.com plan in order to do so.
