    Hi there,

Hi, i recently cancelled a domain within the 48 hour window. How long until WordPress releases the domain? Can you please expedite?

If you choose to cancel your domain, it may take up to several weeks for the registrar to release the domain name or it may choose otherwise.

After cancellation, WordPress.com does not guarantee the domain will become available to register somewhere else, and you may not be able to get it back.
It is highly suggested to keep in mind that you do have the option to keep the domain at WordPress.com, and use it elsewhere, see our alternatives here

Here is a link on managing domains and FAQs for your understanding:

In case you decide to keep your domain, I am marking this query as modlook so a staff member can help you with it :).

    Thanks,
    Chandni

Yes but I already did the cancellation so this does not help. Let me know if there’s a way to reverse the cancellation then, and I can perform a transfer.

Yes, this post has been tagged as “modlook” and “cancel domain” so a staff member can have a look at it However, am not too sure if the process can be reversed. Fingers crossed!

    Thanks,
    Chandni

Apparently it can, as was responded in a live chat just minutes ago. Please refer this to a representative who can process this. Thanks.

  • Hi there,

My colleague already replied to a ticket you have open with us, therefore I’m closing this thread.

The matter was however not resolved so prefer it you do that after it is.

To summarize here – yesterday I cancelled my domain and in subsequent interactions with WordPress (which, by the way, was more or less telling me I should not have done something which could be done by a transfer, which was only visible to me AFTER the domain got cancelled) requested a reversal of that. Nobody contacted me since and I’d like a quick resolution for this reversal and to have the domain back with you so I can transfer it out. Please advise when this can be processed.

  • Hi there,

Cancelled domains are not released immediately, and it can take anything from a few days to over a year before a cancelled domain becomes available again, if at all. You should never cancel a domain that you still want to use, as there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to use it again somewhere else in future.

In this particular case, your domain, dobroafrica.com, should be available again towards the middle of the week at which point you can register it somewhere else. But we do not directly control this process, and we cannot guarantee that the domain will be released. We also cannot manually release it sooner.

The only thing we can still do at this point is restore the domain to your WordPress.com account, but we don’t have that ability indefinitely, so if you prefer that we restore it rather than waiting to see if it’s released again, please let us know so we can get that process started.

Thank you for the great answer. I did say it before but happy to repeat – I would like the domain cancellation restored with WordPress.

  • Let me know if there’s a way to reverse the cancellation then, and I can perform a transfer.

We can still reverse the cancellation, but you won’t be able to transfer the domain somewhere else until you’ve owned it for at least 60 days. As per ICANN regulations domains cannot be transferred for 60 days after registration, a contact information update, or the last transfer, and this regulation applies to all domains at all domain providers.

Thanks, that’s good to know and I’ll keep it in mind. Please proceed to reverse the cancellation.

From my end, I do apologize for causing bit of a confusion and am grateful if you can close this with the reversal.

  • Thanks for confirming. I’ve sent you a link via email which you can use to pay for the domain’s registration again, as your original payment was refunded.

Once we receive your payment we can reactivate the domain on your account.

  • Unknown's avatar

Well received and payment just made. Thanks again.

  • Thank you. I’ve restored the domain to your account, so you’ll see it listed at My Site ->Domains again.

If you want to use it somewhere else you can point it to another provider for now by either changing the name servers or adding that provider’s IP address using custom A records. You can find instructions for both options here:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/

Once you’ve owned it for 60 days you’ll be able to transfer the registration away from us completely, should you prefer.
