How Many Cookies Do Visitors Need?

  • Unknown's avatar

Each page of my site is using at least 40 cookies. Earlier, when I typed the address in directly from a new tab, my browser informed that one page was using 150 cookies! Why? That page with the most uses fewer widgets and, other than in the regular menus, shouldn’t link to anywhere off of WordPress.

How many cookies is normal on a WordPress.com site? Does the number change depending on the visitor’s activity?

    Hi there,

To get an overview of how WordPress handles cookies, take a look at this page: https://en.support.wordpress.com/cookies/

For myself, I would be more concerned with the size and source of cookies rather than just the sheer number. Is there something that’s coming from a source you’re concerned about or that seems to be very large / slowing down your site? If so, check back in and we can help you troubleshoot.

    Hi! Thanks for responding.

Some of them I recognize (apparently safe) but others I don’t. The only reason I’m considering them is because my site has been loading slowly this week and also showing as “not secure” in one of my browsers. When I looked at the cookies, I was surprised by how many cookies are used at times (>100).

I didn’t think to check the size, so I’ll clear my caches and take a look from different computers and browsers.

    No problem!

For reference, here’s a screenshot of the cookie sources (in Chrome) I’m seeing when I look at your site. I am seeing a larger number of cookies when I turn off my Adblock browser extension, in case that info is of help to you.
