How many domains do I need?

    I have a free WordPress address which has 2 blogs on it – one for my creative writing and one for my work as an editor. If I want to upgrade and have my own domain name, do I do each blog separately, and do I have to use the words in my free wordpress address or can I pick new words?

    Every .wordpress.com blog is a separate site. No matter how many blogs are registered under a single username account they are separate and function independently. Nothing you do on one blog will affect the others registered under the same username account.

    A domain purchase applies to a single blog only so if you want each of the two blogs to have a custom domain URL then you have to purchase two separate upgrades – one for each blog.

    When you purchase domain mapping the content stays exactly where it is and nothing except the URLs changes.

    In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from, and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.

    You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard at > Store > My Upgrades to purchase upgrades for the blog.

    After you do the primary blog set up it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.
