How many tags can one have?
-
A person once told me that you can’t have more than 1 tag per 50 words or you won’t show up in search engine searches, that it was tag spam.
I on the other hand think that tag spam is when you write unrelated tags to your post to get extra traffic, for example you wrote about your bamboo and tag it with “sex” … am I right? And how many tags can one have in the end? I’m just curious, cause my blog does still appear at searches, I just want to be sure I’m right :P
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Between 5 and 10 tags is the best, when you have more tags it will reduce the chance people find you in the global tag system.

The person above you, who hinted (and now I’ll go ahead and say it) that more than 10 tags and/or categories on an individual post will throw you off the global tag system, which will SERIOUSLY impact your SEO and make it much harder for search engines to find you. Using so many tags that you get penalized for using too many IS tag spamming in a nutshell.
How many can you have overall? as many as you like.

Okay, thanks guys :) I didn’t use more than 10 anyway just wondered what it meant both ways. Thanks again.

The number given by staff is up to 12 per post. But note that tags and categories are the same as far as search engines are concerned, so you must count the combined total of tags plus categories.

Quote:
“Five to 10 tags (or categories, or a combination of the two) is a good number to add to each of your posts. The more tags you use, the less likely it is that your post will be selected for inclusion in the global tag listings.”It says 10, not 12.

pana: some staff have recently been saying up to 10 instead around the forum. Annoying, if we have to go back and edit down, but there it is.

I do have a number of posts that have around 15-20 [completely relevant] categories and are still included in the tag pages. That is the exception though as they mostly have around 5-10.
Seeing I have close to 500 posts I assume I remain in the tag pages because it’s an exception.

I would hope so, but my hits are down and it’s been months, literally months since I had a referral from a WP.com tag page. That can’t be good. I may even be “adulted!”

@rain: “five to ten”, “good number”, & “less likely” (as well as 10 vs 12) show that we’re not talking about a clearcut limit; the situation has been, and remains, vague – as carocat’s remark proves. Anyway the main point of my post was the italics part: that one must take the categories into account as well.
