We can have as many as we want. But if you want to stay on the global tag page which will bring in traffic to your blog, then probably no more than 12. WordPress doesn’t want spamming on the global tag page because many before use to have dozens of tags on each post that they didn’t even mention in the blog post. But the magic number to stay on the global tag page is about 12.

The 12 is actually for tags + categories, so if you assign three categories to the post, you can only safely have 9 tags.
