How may I delete a tag without deleting its associated posts?
-
I’m doing housecleaning. My blog has too many—some meaningless and littering—tags. I’d like to delete these worthless tags. However, when I enter the tag editing transaction and proceed to delete a tag, the threat is that I will also delete its posts. This I do not wish to do! Must I proceed to each tagged post and manually delete the tag? (Tedious!)

Hi there,
Deleting a tag doesn’t also delete the posts it has been added to. It just removes the tag from those posts. This is if you delete a tag under Posts ->Tags in the dashboard.
Can you tell me where exactly in the dashboard you’re trying to delete them, and what is the exact text of the warning message you’re seeing?

Hi,
Yes, you may delete tags at the Tags page without posts being deleted, as described in the Managing Tags subsection of the Adding and Managing Tags section of the Tags support page.

Thank you, @musicdoc1. Done! So very sad this isn’t also available on my self-hosted wordpress.org WordPress blog! So it goes…
