How Migrate from Wix to WordPress & more

    Hello,

I would like to migrate my website WingChunNews.ca that I built on Wix to WordPress.

I purchased my domain name from Web Hosting Canada.

Can I transfer my page Wix page to WordPress?

Will my landing page on http://www.WingChunNews.ca which was built on Wix has a Blog Post Scrolling Gallery that is at the very top of the page and the Blog Feed below on the page, will this still work WordPress and will it look and work the same ?

I plan on sharing my WordPress blogs which will include YouTube videos in each blog post, I will be sharing them on my Facebook page Wing Chun News at https://www.facebook.com/WingChunNews.ca/ where we have 1.7 million followers. I’m looking for a web builder that is very friendly with Facebook that allows you to use plugins like the share and like buttons, or have a Facebook comment section.

The reason I am leaving Wix is because it doesn’t give you the ability to choose your own thumbnail for your own blog posts if it has a YouTube video in it. Wix will only share the thumbnail that has been added from the YouTube video. When I share my posts with YouTube videos in it on Facebook, the Facebook thumbnail is not centered, when you look at the thumbnail it has a black line on top and only shows the top half of the image.

    Example:

Email from Wix about Custom Image/Thumbnail

“When we do the same for the example site on WordPress, we see that it’s using a custom image that has been cropped to not show the black bars at the top and bottom that the image generated by YouTube provides and that’s why the issue does not occur on the other site. It’s not possible to use custom video thumbnails on Wix currently. We simply pull the thumbnail image that’s set for your video from YouTube directly.”

I believe WordPress let’s you pick your thumbnail for your blog post even if it has a YouTube video in the blog?

Will my footer still look and work the same?

Is there YouTube video that I can watch showing how to migrate from Wix to WordPress?

These are some feature that Wix had that I really liked and I am curious if WordPress also has those features.

Wix App gave me a live notification showing the visitors city and county while visiting my page in real time, does WordPress App have this feature?

My Wix App showed me which pages my visitor were looking at in real time, does WordPress App have this feature

My Wix App allowed me to chat with visitors on my website in real time with them, we could send each other messages in real time, does WordPress App have this feature.

I believe I will be starting with the Premium plan.

Is there any sale deals available with a 12 month plan, with Wix I joined when they had a 50% off deal for 12 months.

If you can help me at all it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much for your time.

    Sincerely,

    Paul Christen

    Hello wingchunnews,

The page one on one would maybe not look as it does right now, but with some custom CSS and a nice theme it could be done.

As a note: .ca domains cannot currently be transferred to WordPress.com. If you already own a .ca domain elsewhere and want to use it with your WordPress.com site, but you can use the Domain Mapping option.

WordPress App allows you to have an overview of the visitors of your page and post/comment on the go. Also push notifications are a possibility to have always an overview of the community you built.

So all this is possible and just needs some time to set up your page design as you have invisioned it.

Thank you very much for your response.

Can you please explain a little more about ”

As a note: .ca domains cannot currently be transferred to WordPress.com. If you already own a .ca domain elsewhere and want to use it with your WordPress.com site, but you can use the Domain Mapping option.”

Are you saying I can not transfer my Wix site to WordPress because my domain is .ca?

l just recently purchased wingchunnews.ca for 12 months thru Web Hosting Canada

If I can, will my address still be http://www.WingChunNews.ca

If I was to purchase a plan right now, could I get customer service to walk me thru this migration from beginning to end, either by chat support or by phone?

How long does it take to do a migration?

    Hi again,

It is possible to map the domain (www.wingchunnews.ca) this a separate “product” WordPress offers.

I will flag this post with help and someone from the Staff can give you more solid answers how it can be done what is needed for it.

    Thank you!

    Hi wingchunnews,

Are you saying I can not transfer my Wix site to WordPress because my domain is .ca?

Your existing content can be migrated to WordPress.com but the domain itself can’t be transferred to us. wingchunnews.ca will need to remain registered with Web Hosting Canada and connected to your WordPress.com site with domain mapping:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

If I was to purchase a plan right now, could I get customer service to walk me thru this migration from beginning to end, either by chat support or by phone?

We don’t provide phone support but our paid plans include email and Live Chat support. We can answer any questions you have about the process there :)

Is there a video or a web article that I can read or watch so I can begin my migration from Wix to Word Press?

Is this a valid article on how to migrate?

    http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-properly-switch-from-wix-to-wordpress-step-by-step/

    Or this video?

Thanks a lot for the info guys, very much appreciated.

  • If you want to move the site to us on WordPress.com you can try steps 4 and 5 in that wpbeginner tutorial. I’ve not seen that myself before, but it looks like it could work. Note that manually editing a .xml file like they explain there can be a bit tricky, though.

You can also use an RSS importer plugin, but for that you’d need the Business Plan on your site. See:
