How much does music slow down a blog?

How much does music slow down the blog opening up or functioning? I would like to add music but fear that it would make my friends complain as they did when I made a slideshow of all of us on the “Monotone” theme.

Not at all or lots, depending on the computer.
If you’re talking about music that automatically plays when the page is loaded, you might find it reduces your readership. My instant reaction to sites that do that is to close the window and never go back.

What if it is not music that automatically plays when the page is loaded? What if it is for, say, a specific post or a specific page? Can a Widget have a song?

Depends on the computer. It shouldn’t slow down the page much for an average user with a modern computer. The music player provided by WordPress.com is small and efficient.
But computers range from antiques to the latest thing; and from well-maintained computers to spyware-riddled buckets of spam that will randomly crash, slow down or spit up errors and pop-up ads at any opportunity. So, uh, “it depends”.

Autoplay resulted in crashes in my old setup 100% of the time.
Something like the audio player that WP provides, however, gave me an option. If I closed all other tabs, windows and programs, I could play it with no problems.
Note that the MAJORITY of internet users are still using IE6, which is not exactly top shelf.

Raincoaster, your last sentence up there made an impression me. I think I’ll leave music alone for now.
