How much space with videopress?

  • Unknown's avatar

What amount of space do I get if I only buy the videopress upgrade and not the space upgrade? Only 3 GB?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yep. Each upgrade at Wp.com applies exclusively to what it says. If it doesn’t say you get more space, you don’t.

This is what the Support Videopress page says:

How much space do I get for videos?

You get as much space as is available on your blog. Free blogs come with 3Gb of space as standard and more can be added using the Space Upgrade option.

From the bottom of the videopress support page ( http://en.support.wordpress.com/videopress/ ):

Can anybody give me a ballpark figure about how much space is consumed by, say, an hour of video when you upload via VideoPress. I guess this might vary widely depending on the quality of the original file. But what if you’re uploading DVD quality (640 px wide, right)? And what if it’s HD?

Just trying to estimate how much video I could post with my 3 gigs, or with an upgrade to 8 gigs, etc.

    Thanks!

It depends on all the settings for the video, the type of compression used and such.

DV-AVI from what I’ve read is about 13-14GB per hour. MPEG about 4GB per hour and about 1.5GB per hour for WMV.

The likelihood of being able to upload anything over 1.5GB is remote at best.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Oh, right, I wasn’t going to try to upload any single hourlong video. More like 6-minute clips. So I was trying to figure out how many of those would chew up 3 gigs. I could see easily having 10 or 20 of them after a little while. So at the low end of what you’re saying, 20 six-minute videos would be 3 gigs.

I’m just going to be editing in iMovie, so I could save as .mov or as mpeg.

I guess you’ve helped me clarify me question, though, which I should state more precisely now:

What is it that eats up your allotted space: what results after WP “crunches” the file or simply the size of the files that I upload?

If it’s the latter, well, that’s easy. I can figure that out. If it’s the former, that’s what confuses me … because that’s sort of blind.

All I can suggest is to create a couple of them and then play with compression and settings to see what gives you acceptable quality and the lowest file size and go from there.
