How not to allow authors to delete media?
-
Hi, everybody. I am very new to wordpress.com.
I am an art teacher, opening a site where my students can submit their works.
Well, I wanted to invite each of them to create their own post where to upload their drawings during the year, but I have seen that they would be allowed not only to upload new images, but also to delete them, even those uploaded by other students.
Am I wrong or it is just like that? And is there a way to avoid the possibility that one crazy student delete all media?Thank you.
Angelo
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No, you need some custom plugin for that and you cannot upload plugins in free wordpress plan

Thank you very much. There is no work around then? I thought …they being contributors would be fine, but ther is not option for them to upload new images on old posts. They should write new articles every time they want to post new images, making the whole thing messy.

Hi there @munariclassevagmailcomprovautente, According to this support guide, https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#author Authors have access to the posts and images that they upload. Where did you see that it’s possible for Authors to delete other users’ media?
In my own testing, it does seem that it is possible for an Author to delete an image in the Calypso Dashboard’s Media Library when opening the image to edit it. However, the red Trash icon does not appear when selecting an image on the front page of the Calypso Dashboard’s Media Library. In the WP Admin Media Library, the option for an Author to permanently delete an image or open it to edit does not appear on other users’ uploads and the only option is to view.
I’m going to go ahead and flag this for Staff’s attention since this looks like a setting that may have been overlooked in the Calypso Dashboard. If not, I’d like to better understand the reason for the change in permission.
Thanks for bringing it up!

Hi Angelo,
I have seen that they would be allowed not only to upload new images, but also to delete them, even those uploaded by other students.
Contributors aren’t able to upload images to the Media Library. Authors are only be able to edit and delete content they have created. They are also able to upload images so it sounds like this user role may do what you are looking for.
In my own testing, it does seem that it is possible for an Author to delete an image in the Calypso Dashboard’s Media Library when opening the image to edit it.
I’ve been able to replicate this on my test site. Can you confirm whether you are seeing the following behaviour?
- Log in as an Author
- Go to Media Library
- Select an image uploaded by another user or role
- Click Edit > Delete
- The image appears to have been deleted
- Refresh the page and the image reappears (it hasn’t been deleted)
Thanks!

Yes, I can confirm that behavior @gemmacevans.
If the other user’s image only seems to be deleted, but isn’t really deleted, then it would appear that the Author role is suitable for what munariclassevagmailcomprovautente wishes to do on their site.
Thanks for checking.

Thanks for your help with testing @justjennifer. The images appear to have been deleted by the Author but they remain in the Media Library. I’ve reported this behaviour :)

Hi @gemmacevans -Hopefully we’re on the same page that Authors can’t delete other users’ images, as is the behavior in the WP Admin Media Library. There’s no link for them to do so. :) Thanks for reporting this.
