How safe is it to store credit/debit card details in Payment Information of my WordPress.com account

  I am apprehensive about storing my payment information in my WordPress.com account, as I have faced an issue of undue automatic charges (with a major US company) earlier as well. What are the chances of any fraudulent activity/automatic charges on the bank card due to system glitches?

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  Hi there,

  When you buy any upgrade from us, automatic renewal will be activated on that upgrade as all upgrades here are subscription-based. However, you can disable automatic renewal, either from the Purchases page once your upgrade is past the refund period, or by contacting us and asking us to disable it for you.

  I won’t say automatic charges due to system glitches is impossible, but I’ve never encountered it where someone was charged after disabling auto-renew so I don’t think there’s much risk. And if it does happen, just contact us within the refund period and we’d be happy to void or refund the charge if that’s what you want.

  Thanks for the response.Is there a way to subscribe to wordpress without storing your credit/debit card details while making payment?

  If you pay via credit card, your card details will appear in your Billing History page:

  https://wordpress.com/me/billing

  And you can delete it there as well, but it won’t be removed from our system entirely.

  We have to store payment details in our system, for legal reasons and in the event that we need to refund you, but if you disable automatic renewal we won’t charge you for anything else without your express permission.

  Thanks!…My actual concern was if there is any kind of possibility of any outside fraudulent activity since the card details would still exist in your system.

  I completely understand that concern. While I’m not able to go into details, I can assure you that all sensitive data like this is stored securely and a very small number of people have access to it. Additionally, all data is encrypted, so even were a hacker able to get the data, they won’t be able to use it.

  And should you ever see a charge that appears to be from us that you don’t recognise you can contact us and we’ll investigate the matter.
