How to activate a plugin via code?
-
Hi,
Is it possible to activate a WordPress plugin via code? Maybe another way to ask it is “What does activating a plugin actually do within the WordPress database system?”
I’d like to be able to switch a plugin on or off from a desktop app.
Thanks in advance for any help!

So what policy have I disregarded? I have a blog here. I was polite, posted a specific question…
Please be specific instead of giving RTFM replies.
BTW The guidelines say to be polite. ‘Please’ remember that. ;-)

MrGreggles, do you have a wordpress.COM blog? If so, please give us the link.
The long answer: The two stickies at the top of the forum explain the difference between wordpress.COM and self-hosted wordpress.ORG. There seems to be a lot of confusion between the two on the part of people posting questions in the COM forums. Unfortunately, those two stickies explaining the difference get overlooked.
Since ORG and COM are entirely different programs, we can only point people who have self-hosted blogs to ask their question over at the wordpress.ORG forums http://wordpress.org/support/

I just popped back on to apologise for my attitude, and I find your very helpful reply. I do have a blog here, but yes, my post would indeed relate to self-hosted WP blogs.
Anyway, apologies for the attitude, but maybe panaghiotisadam could remember that the Golden Word goes a long way, especially in the sensory-deprived environment of a forum.
I’ll head over to the ‘org’.

You’ll probably not see this then, but spend some time here and once you realize the number of ORG bloggers who ask their questions here each day and you’ll have a better understanding of the short reply. Click on the wp.org tag and you’ll see what I mean.
Staff have said they’re working on a way to assist ORG users accidentally posting here to find their way over to the ORG support forum before their question gets posted here. The forum volunteers are hoping it’s sooner rather than later.
Cheers!

Perhaps I should add a few words on this, too.
If one checks past posts, one will see that when it’s necessary we give long, detailed, and patient answers. But the role of volunteers here is not to parrot the same info again and again when it can easily be found in stickies, FAQs and past threads. We are not answering machines obliged to repeat “no plugins in wp.com” or whatever a million times for all those who don’t bother to search. There’s a notice up top that says:
“Need help? Check out our Frequently Asked Questions, then Search the Forums.”
You do the first, then you do the second; if these fail, THEN you post. Some people must learn that. (And to me that’s not exactly impolite: it’s just blunt.)
