Please read this > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Be aware that no blogger initiated advertising of any kind or sponsored content or paid content is allowed on free hosted WordPress.com blogs. You may want to review the information at these links below before you get too far along:

http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/affiliate-links/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/suspended-blogs/
http://en.wordpress.com/tos/There is no upgrade you can purchase that changes anything at all stated here http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
The good news is you can sell what you personally create but our blogs cannot be equipped for Ecommerce transactions. We can use a PayPal button http://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/ and/or acontact form http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/ to sell products and/or services we create. We can set up a shopping cart elsewhere online and create a custom menu on the blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/ with a cusom link to a shopping cart in it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-custom-links
The only advertising program here is WordAds http://wordads.co/ and it lets WordPress.com bloggers with moderate to high traffic and appropriate content blogs on their own domains turn on ads and earn money from their blogs.

I thought so. :)
No sponsored content or paid content or blogger initiated content is allowed. http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/ -
there are a lot of very popular sites using wordpress that have affiliate links and advertisements. Are they able to do this because they turned their wordpress blog into a registered domain?
-
No. They are not free hosted WordPress.com blogs. They are WordPress.org installs. Read the comparison here > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Hire a web host here http://wordpress.org/hostingWe provide support only for free hosted WordPress.COM blogs being hosted right here on this multiuser blogging platform. We do not provide support for WordPress.org software. WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate, have different log-ins and run different versions of themes with same names.
http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

Many blogger assume that purchasing a domain means they can do this, that or the other, but that’s simply not true. All that changes is the URL and everything else remains the same. Read Important Notes Before Upgrading > http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

The only very narrow exception to the no affiliate marketing blogs and no affiliate links policy is found below in italics:
Blogs that violate our advertising policy or fall into one of the following categories are not allowed on WordPress.com:
Affiliate marketing blogs: Blogs with the primary purpose of driving traffic to affiliate programs and get-rich-quick schemes (“Make six figures from home!!”, “20 easy steps to top profits!!”, etc). This includes multi-level marketing (MLM) blogs and pyramid schemes. To be clear, people writing their own original book, movie or game reviews and linking them to Amazon, or people linking to their own products on Etsy do NOT fall into this category. Here is a thread in the support forums that talks more about which affiliate links are OK or not OK. http://en.wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/ -
Empower Network is just that, and when they sell you into their “program” they say you get a wordpress blog which they charge 20.00 a month for. And most people with their wordpress blogs advertise empower network with ads and links all over the place. Shouldn’t they be banned for this? How are they allowed to sell someone a free wordpress blog? Just thought I would ask since you had pointed out the mlm thing. :)

That site at empowernetwork. com is NOT a free hosted WordPress .com blog. WordPress.org software is open source free software available to everyone. All you have to pay for is web hosting. I hope get that and you understand that we provide support only for free hosted WordPress.com blogs like http://theniftythriftygal.wordpress.com/ here.
