How to add a downloadable file to my WordPress blog – link text or linked image

    Hi – I can’t remember how to add a download link to my blog – ie when the user clicks on the link I want it to allow them to *download and save* a document to their computer.

    In short I want my readers to be able to download a poster of my children’s book The Secret Lake.

    I have uploaded an image of the book cover to my media library as a jpeg file but when I insert it into my page when you click on it it doesn’t fire up a download, rather it shows the image – and if you print that image you get info added at the top and bottom of the page showing date and time etc, rather than just the image….

    (I know there is a way to do this as I have added download links to Word documents on one of my other blogs.. eg see here http://thesecretlake.wordpress.com/puzzle-clues/ but can’t now remember how I did it and can’t work out how to make it work with a jpeg image rather than a Word document.!)

    All help gratefully received! I have looked at all of your posts on this but they don’t seem to show how to make the link work as a download when the user clicks on it!

    Hi there. For an image people can download it by right-clicking and selecting Save image as. I don’t know of a way to auto-download images when clicked.

    As for the documents, in the post editor click on Add Media and the add the document file to your media library or select a document already there, and insert it into your post/page. Full instructions here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/uploading-documents/

    You can always create a PDF document of the image that visitors will be able to download by clicking if you add it using the above instructions.
