How to add a drop down menu in Sela (theme)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Does anyone know how I can add a drop-down menu to one of my header menu pages? Want to add different sections for recipes (baking, travel, art) and am in the Sela theme but don’t know how to add the white drop-down menu to my pages. Thanks to anyone who knows how to do this!

    Hello!

    To create a sub-menu / drop-down menu item drag and drop it again, this time to the right, so it indents beneath the main menu item.

    Please refer to chapter 3 of this guide. “Organize your menu”
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

    It has some great animations on how to add sub-menus!

    I hope that helps, and let me know if you have any other questions!

    Thanks! I followed the instructions but am still having trouble, when I try to add my drop-down menu choices it keeps on showing up in the top header menu instead of drop-down, even after I use the drag-and-drop below each header. Help please?

    @bindlesxx,

    The header menu of the site https://beingbindyblog.wordpress.com/ has two generations of submenu items in a drop-down menu under the top-level menu item “All the Food.” Have you resolved the issue?

    Hi,

    The ability to have a custom header menu on each page is not an option on WordPress.com sites as it requires custom coding. There are plugins for this feature, but it requires a Business Plan subscription.

    In this case, I would recommend using the ‘Custom Menu Widget’ and putting the menu in the side-bar of the Sela theme.

    To do this, create a new menu (or menus), complete with the sub-menus you desire, then go to the page where you would like the menu, and add the Custom Menu Widget found under ‘Themes’-> ‘Customize’ -> ‘Widgets’ -> ‘Custom Menu Widget’

    This guide has more information on the Custom Menu Widget: https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/custom-menu-widget/

    I hope that helps, and let me know if you have any other questions!

    @joerepublic,

    Hi. The custom menus widget might be a helpful suggestion, though it can not display sub-menu items in drop-down format on the Sela theme. Also, I’m not following your meaning here:

    The ability to have a custom header menu on each page is not an option on WordPress.com sites…

    The custom header menu does display on each page with the Sela theme applied, and specifically displays on each page of the OP’s site, https://beingbindyblog.wordpress.com/.

    @bindlesxx,

    when I try to add my drop-down menu choices it keeps on showing up in the top header menu instead of drop-down, even after I use the drag-and-drop below each header.

    It’s not clear what you’re after. Drop-down menus, when constructed, will naturally appear in the menu to which they are added, and in the location to which that menu is assigned. In this case, it’s the “Primary Menu,” which appears at the bottom of the header. Where did you want your drop-down menus to appear?

    @musicdoc1

    It is my understanding that @bindlesxx is looking to create a ‘unique’ custom header for each page. I’m not familiar drop-down menus in side-bars, but it probably wouldn’t be necessary if each page had it’s own Custom Menu Widget.

    Just to add, the custom menu widget does have drop-downs, but not your typical drop-down animated button, but rather like the example shown here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/custom-menu-widget/

    @joerepublic,

    Do you mean unique custom header menus? If so, perhaps you’re right. : -)

    Just to add, the custom menu widget does have drop-downs…

    Although a sub-menu is sometimes displayed as a drop-down menu, the terms “sub-menu” and “drop-down menu” aren’t synonymous. The items in a drop-down menu are hidden until an action by the visitor causes them to display. On a PC, the necessary action would be to point the cursor at, run the cursor over, the top-level item.

    The custom menu widget doesn’t display sub-menu items in a drop-down menu on the Sela theme, and the widget doesn’t have an optional setting that may be checked to cause it to display “child” or sub-menu items in drop-down menus. However, I guess it’s possible that on another theme the custom menu widget might display drop-down menus.

    That should have been “point the cursor at, or run the cursor over, the “parent” item of the sub-menu items.”
