how to add a page and have it show on the menu bar
-
I’m not dumb, have been a member of this site for several years, know how to do simple code, and wanted to update my blog a bit. I want to simply add a page. I have many drafts, but when I try and post them, they don’t show up on the menu bar. I recently updated to the 2011 theme with the idea of adding a photo gallery and possibly other pages. At this point, I’ve searched all the forums, I’ve askied various ways on google and feel like a moron.
Could someone please, without pointing me to a “how to page” because they aren’t telling me “how to” explain step by step how to simply add a page and have it appear on my menu bar? I know this can’t be THIS frustrating and time consuming.
Thank you

Go here Appearance > Menus and
enable this:
Menu Name
__Automatically add new top-level pages
Then click “save menu” -
thank you and sorry I didn’t use the correct address. I’ll try this. Sounds easy enough.

No problem. That was just an FYI for the other volunteers (so that there would be no confusion as to whether you had a WordPress.com blog or a WordPress.org, or neither)

Wait.
Are you writing a Post, or are you writing a Page? Pages show up in the header on themes with tabbed headers. Posts do not, unless you use a Custom Menu.

right on!@breezen
This is for the standard blog set up where Page tabs appear in the horizontal menu.
How to create Pages > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/This set up is for creating a web site structure by creating a custom menu.
What’s critical is:
(1) a clear comprehension of the differences between pages and posts > http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/(2) a clear comprehension of the fact that here is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts and we cannot post to more than that one page. But we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.
We organize our posts by assigning Categories to them. When we publish a post it automatically appears on the running page for posts and also on the Categories pages and Archives pages. Note: There must be one published post in each Category in order for there to be anything to display.
A custom menu allows you to display Categories in tabs along the horizontal navigation where normally only Pages tabs are displayed. If you wish you can also include Pages and custom links in your custom menu as well.
How to create a custom menu http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
1. Don’t forget to enable:
Menu Name
__Automatically add new top-level pages2. You add the Parent pages you want to display and arrange them in the order you want.
3. Then you add and drop and drag the subpages below the appropriate Parent pages, and when you have everything arranged in the menu that you want you save the menu.
4. Go to the “theme location” module at upper left on the menu page. Select your custom menu name from the pulldown labeled “primary location.” Click the save button in that module.
5. Refresh your browser so that it isn’t possibly pulling a cached page, and view see your new menu with Parent pages and dropdowns to sub-pages.
