How to add account membership for user submissions.

Hi all,
I was hoping that someone may be able to steer me in the right direction. I haven’t found much information for what I want to do with my site. I’m trying to create a site (blog type layout, very simple) where users can post images, with descriptions, and allow others to comment on them. One great example would be like peopleofwalmart.com
I would basically like to allow users to feed the content, but be able to control it by having them sign up and create an account. I don’t know if this is possible with WordPress, but I’m hoping all I need is additional plugins to make this happen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I DO have a wordpress.com account, and I’m aware of the difference. I’m seeking information on the capability of WordPress.

Sorry what your asking above can only be done with the WordPress.org software plus buddypress. here is staffs newest posts about BuddyPress being available now to work with single install of WordPress.org software.in stead of just WordPress MU » BuddyPress for One (and All!)

Or their might be a plugin for membership but again this won’t work at WP.com and you will need to seek information on both options over @ http://Wordpress.org/support & http://buddypress.org/forums/
