How to add actual "categories" to my category widget?

I have my category widget as a drop down box but can’t figure out how to add categories to it
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You do not add categories to widgets you either add them in your dashboard or by using the categories module in posts. All you can do in any widget is configure display. Categories widgets do not have any data to display under any given category until you actually publish a post with a category assigned to it in the said category.
