How to add an existing image to an existing gallery?
-
I have an gallery on a separate page with images in it. I want to add some images to this gallery from my media library, the images are already uploaded and exist in posts. How do I do that?
I am reading through gammagirl FAQ, but am not finding this information.
Thank you for your help!

Do thesacredpath’s answers in this thread help?
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/gallery-question?replies=6#post-296409 -
No, timethief, it doesn’t help, sorry! I searched the forum and read this and some other threads, but no luck.
My images are already uploaded, they are in my media library. Now I want to add several of them to a gallery that is located on a separate page. The images in question are not unattached, they are attached to some posts on the home page.

I am still stuck and would appreciate help, if possible.
Is it not possible to add images from a media library to an existing gallery? If this is the case, please tell me, so I would stop trying and waiting for help. Thank you.

I don’t have an answer but justjennifer, tess or panos will.
I have a link to this post that is all about the gallery – How do I insert a Gallery in my Post or Page? http://gammagirl.wordpress.com/2008/07/27/not-the-official-wordpresscom-gallery-faq/ -
Thank you for replying, timethief. I know how to create and insert a gallery. Gammagirl’s FAQ is very useful in many ways, but it doesn’t answer this particular question.
I will wait for justjennifer, tess or panos. Is it possible to let them know of my question? I know you are all volunteers and appreciate your time and commitment.

There is no way to let them know. We don’t keep a schedule and aren’t amenable to scheduled volunteering. When we can help we do.

Jennifer’s post does address the issue. Quote:
Can I add or delete images in my existing Gallery?
To add an image, have the Post or Page where the Gallery appears open in the Editor, click on the “Add an Image” button and upload your additional image in the Image Uploader. The new image will also appear in the Gallery tab. If necessary, reorder your thumbnails as described above. If you want to add an image to your Gallery from your Media Library, you must first attach it to the Post or Page where the Gallery appears. Instructions for attaching Unattached Files [link] can be found in the WordPress.com Support docs.An image will only show up in a gallery if it’s attached to the gallery post. As far as I know, images attached to other posts cannot be used from the media library for a gallery: they must be reuploaded to the gallery post. The paragraph above implies the same thing – but Jennifer might know some extra detail I’m not aware of.

“…the images are already uploaded and exist in posts. How do I do that?”
Hi pencilscribbles- your answer is at the very bottom of my FAQ (gammagirl), although it will produce a Gallery Page very unlike what you have now. “Can I have a Page that displays all my existing Galleries?”
Every Post, whether it includes a Gallery or not, has an ID#. In the HTML Editor for a new Page, use that Post ID# in combination with [gallery id="XX"]. You can see this in action here http://gammagirl.wordpress.com/galleries/2/

panaghiotisadam, timethief and justjennifer – thank you for trying to help me!
I have follow-up questions:
1. Where do I find the Post ID#? I am looking in HTML view for the post and not finding it.
2. Do I need a gallery ID as well?
3. Where in Gallery page should I put [gallery id="XX"] ? I assume that “XX” is the post ID – correct?

I found the answer to question 1. above.
To find the Page ID, go to Pages->Edit and hover over the title of the page. The status bar of your browser will display a URL with a numeric ID at the end. This is the page ID. http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/pages-widget/ <.blockquote>

On mine, I have to actually click on ‘edit’ to get the page ID, and then it’s a 3-digit number after an = sign. Not sure if it works that way for everyone, though.
Hi pencilscribbles…

Actually, this does not seem to solve the problem.
I’m stuck at the same issue and as far as I understand it is only possible to add a working gallery tag if you use a) otherwise unattached images or b) upload them
An image already attached to a different post or in another gallery can not be reused.
Can anyone verify this?
Thanks a lot in advance! -
I know that images have to remain in the media library or they disappear from their posts, but can those images somehow be re-used for another post or page, like the OP asked? If that question has been answered, my apologies for asking it again, but it’s just not clear yet.

For an image to appear in a Gallery, it has to be uploaded to the Post or Page where you want the Gallery to appear. You can’t (as yet) include images in a Gallery that are already in your Media Library. (Hoping the WP fairy is listening)
