How to add Child Theme
-
Good day ~
We are interested in the protocol of creating a Child Theme for making changes to the design of the Parent Theme. This is per this article:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes
It says that we need to ftp to create a directory and add an additional .css file.
What are our ftp login credentials please?
Thanks for your help.

Howdy,
Child themes and FTP are only available on self-hosted WordPress sites hosted elsewhere. They’re not available on WordPress.com.
However, you can customize your theme CSS with the Pro plan:

Thanks so much Chris ~ that really helps!
We have a Premium account, so I guess that doesn’t foot the bill.
Was wondering, if we use the Custom CSS you referred to, does that have the same effect as a Child Theme, i.e., those changes would be in effect, even if the Parent theme gets updated? If so, then I can let go of the need to create a Child Theme, right?
Thanks again so much!

Hi @solvibe, I hope you don’t mind me jumping in to help.

That’s right. Your CSS changes will stick with this theme even as we apply any patches and what not. Just note if you change your theme, the CSS will be reset (since it wouldn’t apply to the new theme anyway). And if you change back your CSS will be there. We also keep revisions.
Actual child themes can potentially introduce unstable or even malicious code, so we don’t allow them for the sites we manage on our servers. But if you’re maintaining your own copy of the WordPress.org code at another host, you can install them there. You’d just need to fix it, too, if something went wrong. I hope that helps!
