How to add Facebook like button?

  I’ve seen a couple of explantions that say it is simple – just need to copy the code into the side bar. It’s not that simple. What widget do I use? I tried using the text widget, yet it edits the code for some reason so it doesn’t work. I can’t see another option. I really need a step-by-step guide in plain English. Can someone help?

  In WordPress.COM, you can add the FB like button to your “sharing” buttons (go to your dashboard, scroll till you see “settings,” go to “sharing,” and then you can drag & drop the Facebook like button to your posts). It is not possible to add the like button to your sidebar, and really, since your blog post page is dynamic, there’s no reason for it to be in a sidebar (IMO), since the content changes. If you have a static front page and enable the sharing buttons for pages as well as posts, you will have the fb button on your static front page.

  A dynamic front page has the advantage of keeping your site looking fresh and keeping the interest of your visitors. Even if you use your wp.com site more as a “website” and less as a blog, keeping the blog posts page as the “entry” for your blog is probably a good idea.

  We cannot use the Facebook link box widget on WordPress.com blogs. I sense that may be what you are asking so I’m clarifying why the code is being stripped out. It’s being stripped to preserve security. http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/

  As mmadfan has explained we can have sharing buttons below our posts. Here are relevant links:

  Ah, so I wasn’t going mad, it’s not possible! Thanks for your advice. I will probably just add the ‘like’ button to posts.

  If you want the sharing icons to show up on the front page of your blog below the posts then make sure to select “Posts and index pages” for “Show sharing buttons on” the setting. http://en.support.wordpress.com/sharing/#troubleshooting
