How to add image into primary widget area of twenty-ten

Hi all,
I’m rubbish at playing wih the details. On my old wordpress.com could just change the homepage image in the primary widget area ( pic of me). But in the wordpress.org it isn’t so easy – there is no ‘image’ option. A friend had uploaded the image for me by putting some text in the ‘text’ box she had put inside the primary widget area. Thinking I was clever I added a new pic of me to the gallery then tried to paste that link into the box instead….and now it’s either blank or shoes the actual text of the link. what did I do wrong??
