How to add readers to locked blog

  If you lock your blog, how do you add a reader without making them a contributor? Is a contributor someone who can write on the blog? Or just the comments?

  I want to permit only invitees to read my blog. Is this possible without getting into whether they can write in it or not? Ie without letting them write in it except for comments?
