How to add rel="publisher" markup to link website to Google Page?

    Good Morning

@raincoaster – and still does for some users, really very odd, believe me I’ve been racking my brain trying to figure out why it verifies for some and not others – I keep testing hoping to find the reason but so far haven’t been able to pinpoint, doesn’t help that my experience with working with code is minimal.

Absolutely nothing to do with advertisers or non advertisers.

@druesome I’m not sure if you’ve read my responses but I am well aware of how to direct link via Webmaster Tools but for some users the variables (proper primary link, redirects etc) makes it difficult for them to implement (I am a volunteer in the Webmaster Tools Forum) for example, I have been working with a user currently and although I am providing very detailed instruction it’s been difficult. I remember when I first started online I too found things like this difficult. And keeping this in mind I always try and find a solution that is the least frustrating so that the user can reap the benefits of what Google has to offer. I hope this clarifies.

  • Hello Grace,

I am well aware of how to direct link via Webmaster Tools but for some users the variables (proper primary link, redirects etc) makes it difficult for them to implement

Can you clarify on what you meant by primary link and redirects? In my instructions, you would only need to look at the steps listed under the “Webmaster linking” heading in Google’s support page:

    *****
Make sure you’re using Google My Business as the page you’d like to manage.

    1. Click Profile on the left-hand navigation menu.
    2. On the ‘About’ tab, click the Link website button next to your website URL.
    3. If we know the webmaster for this website, we’ll give you the option to send a request to the webmaster to approve the link. Requesting approval will reveal your email address to the site owner.
    4. The verified webmaster can confirm the link in Webmaster Tools.

Once the link has been approved, you’ll receive and email. You’ll also see a checkmark verified checkmark next to your website on the ‘About’ tab of your page’s profile.

Unfortunately, right now the method that involves Webmaster Tools is the only way for our users to connect a Google+ page to their blogs as our current infrastructure doesn’t allow for snippets to be inserted in the <head> tags.

Let me know if you had other questions. Thanks!

    Good Evening druesome,

For webmaster direct linking the user must add their primary domain link to the Google+ Page, preferred URL version of the homepage and it must be added and verified for that version in Webmaster Tools and the link must not redirect.

If the user adds the www version link to the Google+ Page but has the non www version of the site verified in Webmaster Tools, the site will not be linked correctly. If the user lists their primary domain link again as the www version of the site and it redirects to the non www version of the site, again, the website will not be linked correctly, publisher will not verify.

    Grace

  • Hi Grace,

Yes, that’s correct. The “www” is automatically stripped from our custom domains, and the user has to be instructed to enter their links without the “www” both in Google+ and Google Webmaster Tools. Again, this is the only available option for our users at the moment. Thanks!

  • Hi again,

I’ve created a new support doc to help users connect a Google+ page to their WordPress.com blog:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/connect-a-google-page-to-your-blog/

If you encounter anyone who’s having trouble getting it done, please refer them to that page. Thanks!

    Good News!

Google has updated the support page and now there are two clear options, you can place the publisher tag in the <head> section or in the <body> section of the HTML.

@druesome – not every can direct link because the the link a website button is not always available – which means they must add the publisher markup.

If possible, can you post a tutorial explaining how to add the Google+ Badge to a WordPress.com site? I think this would be most beneficial.

    Thanks

    Grace

Thanks for the update! I’ve tried that as well, but note that there’s a one to two day delay before a site gets approved using this method. The Webmaster linking method resulted in faster approval than Direct linking.

not every can direct link because the the link a website button is not always available – which means they must add the publisher markup.

I’m not sure if we’re on the same page about direct linking. The method I suggested involved Webmaster linking, not Direct linking. Additionally, the “Link website” button should show up for both methods. Can you kindly point me to the forum thread you’re moderating so I could better understand what problems users are having with it?

If possible, can you post a tutorial explaining how to add the Google+ Badge to a WordPress.com site?

Embedding the Google+ Badge requires inserting custom Javascript, which isn’t supported in our service at this time.

    Add Code to Your Site

    Thanks!

A delay? I’ve never encountered a delay. It’s been my experience (and I assist a lot of users) that as soon as the markup is added to the site the check mark appears and publisher verified appears in the Structured Data Testing Tool.

To explain, to direct link via Webmaster Tools, the link a website button must populate, some users are not seeing the button therefore they must direct link using publisher markup on the site page.

Also, if they are not the verified owner (which happens on occasion), Google sends a notification to the verified owner to approve the link – this sometimes creates confusion too. (There are cases where someone is linking a Google+ Page to a site but they are not the verified owner.)

I didn’t realize the WordPress.com user could not add the badge because of the javascript – I’ll look for another solution, Google is okay with an invisible link in the <body> according to the updated support page, I’ll offer this solution.

Thanks for your help this has been enlightening exercise and it’s helped me to understand what and what isn’t available to the WordPress.com user.

  • Not a problem! Thank you too, for bringing this up! :)
