  How can I add a second or third sidebar?

  If you want to stay at wordpress.com then there is only one way you can alter your theme’s appearance. That is through purchasing an upgrade and doing css customization.

  The other alternative is to leave wordpress.com and either self host your own free blog from wordpress.org or hire a web host. More information here http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=3700&replies=1

  @tokamak3: If you switch to Sandbox, Andreas04 or Andreas09 themes, they all have 2 sidebars.

  Unsleepable has one sidebar and a footer that can take widgets.
