how to add tags

  • Unknown's avatar

I know the aswer to this is really simple and perhaps quite obvious. But I simply cannot find…

where to go to add a tag description to my page. It’s listed under a few tags already, but I have decided another one is in order. But I can’t find where to do that. If the answer is in the FAQ than it’s hidden quite well, cause it doens’t come up there.

    thanks

perhaps it’s because you’re phrasing your question differently than what the faq has done. i don’t quite understand what you mean myself by ‘tag description to my page’. do you mean you want to add a tagline to your blog? or something else?

If you’re asking about category tags (the terms are interchangeable here at wp.com), here is what the FAQ has to say:
    http://faq.wordpress.com/tag/categories/

yes, i do see that i’m having trouble explaining explicitly what I mean, even though it’s a simple matter…

What I mean is, right now my blog is listed under the categories of “culture” and “belgium”. I’d like it to be found under another category also. How do I do that?

I am not referring to categorizing (by adding descritive tags) specific posts. I do see how to do that. I mean the entire blog.

    Thanks-

The primary place to add new categories is here
    => Dashboard => Categories => Add New
The secondary place to add last minute categories “on the fly” (whilst writing a post) is into the categories box found on the right hand side on the “write post” page.
At wordpress.com the terms Categories and Tags are synonymous. And Technorati will also recognize the wordpress categories you assign to any post as tags.
The categories/tags you add to a post will determine which wordpress.com tag page category pages your posts will be displayed on.
I used to have Techorati tags on all my posts. I found they were unnecessary as Technorati recognized the wordpress categories I assigned to posts as tags. I removed all the Technorti tags and the posts are still displayed at Technorati under the wordpress categories as tags.

You can only categorize the posts, not the whole blog

    Ok thank you.

I evidently somehow misunderstood that you can’t tag/categorize the whole blog. I thought I remembered having done so at some point earlier.

  • Unknown's avatar

well, you could tag the entire blog in technorati…

Folks have asked for the ability to categorize an entire blog. Gotta admit that I don’t like the idea (ie: most of us have blogs that cover more than one basic category, blogs change in content over time, too easy for spammers to abuse, may not be right, etc.) but feel free to subkmit a feedback and suggest the idea.

Your individual post categories should get your blog categorize once you use them enough. YOu can also use a service like blogshares if you want.

I simply wanted to add this, as one exapmle of discussions that sound like what I had thought (that you can tag your blog as a whole):

…”The mature tag is for the entire blog, not just a single bit I’m afraid.

I’d just create a second blog myself and put up a static Page on the front of it if you’re concerned about content and the age of those viewing it.”
(the whole thread can be found here: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=4395&page&replies=9)

that was written by drmike. Maybe it’s specific to a “mature” label or soemthing? anyway, it IS confusing sometimes…

regardless, Thanks for all ya’lls input!

yes, it’s specific to the mature tag, which i like to think of as more of a flag than a tag :)
