How to add themes to wordpress?

I have come here for a little newbie help as I am somewhat confused so hope you can help me please if you can.
I just got a wordpress blog today and the included themes are really not my style (have currently defaulted with the plain sandbox for now). I had a search for some better themes and there are some beautiful ones out there but I downloaded a very minimal design trouble is I do not know how to apply themes to my blog.
I had a look through the dashboard and in the themes section but cannot find if I can upload a new theme.
I also downloaded the wordpress 2 software but that is confusing me too. The help section says to change the php file to include my login details and then upload it, but it does not say to where. Am I right in assuming I can only use this with my own webspace that has php facility?
I am sorry if these seem like duncey questions but I have been going round in circles and cannot see the wood for the trees, so to speak. -
I hope that the information I have provided clarifies where you are at. If not post again and someone else can take a run at helping you. Above all be patient. We are all volunteers with varying levels of skills.
In a nutshell wordpress.com is for those who just want to blog and not for “techie” types. WordPress.org is for technie types or folks who have web hosts to do the techie stuff for them.
(1)wordpress.com and wordpress.org are very different – they operate on different code bases
(2) this forum is for wordpress.com bloggers who can only choose bewteen the themes that you rejected
or if they have the skills to do so they can choose css customization of a theme
(3) now you have downloaded a wordpress theme from wordpress.org which is for bloggers who host their own blogs on their own servers and for those who are clients of webhosting services
(4) if you are looking for a webhost you could look here http://wordpress.org/hosting
(5) if you intend to host your own blog on your own server then this is the forum you should be in http://wordpress.org/support
(6) if you really just wanted to blog and not do any coding or techincal stuff but just didn’t like the theme choices then you could stay here at wordpress.com – then two options are available to you
(a) resign yourself to choosing one of the themes you rejected previously
(b) or if you have css coding skills then you can purchase the upgrade and customize a theme to suit you -

Please remember that the software you get from WordPress.org is different from the software that run this site at WordPress.com.
