How to add widgets

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I’ve got some trouble with creating my blog.
I looked at some other peoples blogs and i saw that some of them had local weather widgets and local time widgets on their blog. I have also seen people with multiple headers(the main pictures changes everytime you refresh their website). I have no experience with this and i have no clue how to create these things.
Could someone please give me some advise?
I looked on the internet but i cant find the right explanation about what to do with these strange (javascript?) codes.
    thanks a lot!

  • Hi, Wesley. If you find HTML widget code for graphics or buttons you can paste them into a Text Widget and display them in the sidebar of your blog. We have some great instructions and a video on how to do that on our Text Widget page.

Other types of Javascript widgets you might find will not work because we remove JavaScript, Flash, iframe, form and input tags for security reasons.

It’s not possible to have a header that changes it’s image on page reloads on WordPress.com but if you upload an animated GIF as your header image—pre-cropped to the exact size—to one of our themes with a custom header you should have a “rotating” image for your header.

    I hope that helps!

I tried the code from this website: http://www.worldtimeserver.com/clocks/wtsclock001.aspx
its html and it says it works on wordpress but i cant make it work. I dragged the text widget to the sidebar, paste in the object html and saved it, but when i look on my blog i just see the test and not the clock…
    what did i do wrong?

  • Hi, Wesley. The first code option on that page uses Javascript and the second uses embed tags; neither of which are allowed on WordPress.com for security reasons. And it looks like the instructions on that widget page aren’t differentiating between WordPress.com and self-hosted (WordPress.org) blogs.

Don’t worry, you’re not doing anything wrong. :)

I’m puzzled because the blog linked to your wordpress.com username is not a wordpress.com blog. If your are seeking help with a wordpress.com blog then please post the URL for the blog in question. Alternatively you could link that wordpress.com blog to your username. If the blog you are seeking help with is not a free blog being free hosted by wordpress.com then you ought to be posting to http://wordpress.org/support

    Ho Wesley,
Thanks for the URL. We can use any widgets that do not include code that’s restricted and themeshaper gave you the link for the relevant entry above. That means the codes must be HTML. The weather pixie widget will work. You place it in a text widget.

This is the main link to the in house widget selection in the support documentation. You can click individual links for more information of each widget. http://en.support.wordpress.com/topic/widgets-sidebars/

    @wesley
We provide support for using wordpress.com software. We don’t do Google searches to locate widgets for other bloggers … lol :D This time I will do this for you but in the future you will have to do your own fishing (searching the internet).

For a weather pixie widget click this link and scrool down to “wordpress.com” http://www.howtodothings.com/computers-internet/how-to-add-a-weather-report-to-your-blog

As for a clock, almost all based on dynamic scripts (javascript) and we cannot use them on our blogs. frankly as we a ll have clocks on our computers and as each blogger can set their own timezone on their blog here > Settings > General I don’t consider that to be a significant loss.

The only clock I know of that we can use here is this one http://www.al-habib.info/islamic-clock/digital-clock-ornament-button-01.htm

    Happy blogging. :)
