How to add WordAds advertisement windows

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hey…

I’m trying to add small ad windows in posts and in the header (a banner) so that ads will show. Currently, the top of my page doesnt show any more ads because “my theme don’t support it.” Is there any way to manually add code so that ads appear in windows I set, for an example, I add an ad window in a post?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, If your site is part of the WordPressdotcom WordAds program, here’s a recent blog post that might be of interest to you, https://wordads.co/2018/02/07/how-to-control-jetpack-ad-placements-using-hooks/ Notice it also mentions WordPressdotcom users.

However, since you’ve already mentioned that you’ve encountered a message saying that your theme, Periodical, doesn’t support additional ad placement, please also wait for Staff to reply to this thread.

Ah, just noticed that you posted your thread in the CSS Customization forum. I don’t believe Custom CSS will change WordAds placement, so I’ve moved your thread to the Support forum.

  • Hi there,

Custom CSS won’t allow this type of change, no, and it’s also not possible to edit the code directly if your site is on WordPress.com. The article @justjennifer linked to above only applies to sites using the open source WordPress.org software that display WordAds using the Jetpack and AdControl plugins.

Your theme, Periodical, is not optimized for WordAds, so it won’t show ads in the header and sidebar like optimized themes. See the ad placement section here:

    Huh! Thanks @kokkieh

I must have been misled by the mention of WordPress.com in that *WordAds article. Is it incorrect? Thanks again for any clarity.

    *Edited to correct source

  • Are you referring to:

On WordPress.com, you can find these controls on the WordAds settings page.
Using Jetpack Ads, you can find these controls on the Traffic tab in Jetpack’s settings screen.

I think the intent there was to indicate WordAds on WordPress.com and Jetpack Ads have different settings and options available. The filter hooks are only available on Jetpack Ads, as there’s no way to make those changes on a WordPress.com site.

Exactly that. I took a look at a different account that I have which has WordAds available and there do seem to be more ad placement options under WordAds>Settings> like in the first screenshot in that WordAds blog post. I don’t recall those being there previously.

  • Those are new, yes, but will only work if your theme supports those options, i.e. on a theme that doesn’t support header ads, enabling header ads won’t have any effect.

    Perfect. Thanks for clarifying this.

    Hey everyone…

Thanks so much for the support. Oh well… I’ll try playing around with CSS to see what other customisation I can do. In the meantime, do you have any idea how to view which CSS is being used for what, I know WP has a video on that but I whenever I seem to add into my CSS, I seem to change a lots of things I really dont wanna change :/

    Thanks again!

but whatever I seem to add into my CSS…* (typo)

  • It’s not possible to view your theme’s CSS file, but you can see the CSS controlling specific parts of the layout by using your browser’s built-in developer tools.

    See: https://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/how-to-find-your-themes-css/

If you need help making a specific change using CSS, please create a new thread in the CSS forum or contact us via live chat: https://wordpress.com/help/contact

However, please be aware that CSS can only be used to change the appearance of what’s already on your site. It can’t be used to add something that isn’t there already, like additional ad slots.
