How to adjust, not change, a blog address URL?

  • Unknown's avatar

The instructions for reordering posts chronologically say go to your URL and add, etc. etc. BUT where do I go to adjust the URL? I don’t think its the top navigation bar and the only instructions I found were to completely change my URL. I only want to add the dates so I can reorder posts.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

In the classic post or page editor, the published date and time can be changed in the Publish module at the calendar icon. Click on the edit tab below the icon. In the new (Beep Beep Boop) editor, go to Blog Posts or Pages > selected post/page > Edit > Change Status, to edit the published date and time.

That is not what I asked at all. According to the support page,if you want to change the ORDER of your posts chronologically–that is, in ascending as opposed to descending order–you need to edit the URL. However, the instructions do not tell you where to edit the URL–obviously not in the top of your screeen, so where and how?

    Thanks

One way to change the order is to change dates, and post URLs are dated. Therefore, when you change the date, you change the URL of a post. I gave you correct instructions, for reordering posts in both the old (classic) and the new editor.

Blogs are essentially a reverse chronological order publishing tool wherein the most recent published post will display on top. There is no upgrade that allows you to change this post order on a free hosted WordPress.com blog.

Reverse chronological order is designed to serve your visitors as they come to read the most recent posts and they will not be inclined to trawl through hundreds of posts to locate it.

See here for the option of creating a book-like structure > http://en.support.wordpress.com/write-a-book/ Perhaps that will work for you.

Or you could use a single sticky post as an index page > http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-visibility/#sticky-posts

Or you can falsify every date-stamp before publishing.

Staff have provided this support doc http://en.support.wordpress.com/show-your-posts-in-chronological-order/

    Thanks, TT,

Here is the link I am talking about and it says you CAN reorder your posts: https://en.support.wordpress.com/show-your-posts-in-chronological-order/

I just don’t get the part about the URL. where can I adjust it?

I have considere the “book” idea and I like you suggestion aboutte sticky post…in other wors, I don’t need a separate index page?
    Thanks!

    @ pombavou,

I just don’t get the part about the URL. where can I adjust it?

You adjust the URL, for purposes of reordering posts, by changing the dates, as I informed you in each of my previous posts above. I told you where to change the dates in my first post.

    @pombavou-

If I understand correctly, you want to change the display order of your posts, not the dates of the posts themselves.

If so you would use the links mentioned in that Support doc to change the display from

    https://walleyed.wordpress.com/2015/
which will display all your posts from 2015 in descending order

    to https://walleyed.wordpress.com/2015/?order=asc
which will display all your posts from 2015 in ascending order.

If you want your entire post entries to be displayed in ascending order, the link would be https://walleyed.wordpress.com/?order=asc

I’m thinking this link absolutely has to be added to the menu using a Custom Menu (which that Support doc says is optional). Here’s more on that https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/2/

Let us know if you need more help with that.

    @ pombavou,

The Show your Posts in Chronological Order support page includes outlines of four different methods of presenting or displaying lists of posts in chronological order. I don’t think each of the methods applies to your case, but I’ll let you decide upon that. A brief description of each of the four methods follows:

    1. Add a String to Your URLs — The examples in this section are all archives pages. A custom menu would allow you to use archives pages of this kind most effectively, as suggested by justjennifer above.

    2. Use a ShortcodeDisplay Posts Shortcode may be a valuable option in your case, because among the numerous arguments you may add to the basic code to customize it are those specifying post dates, and the order in which they will be displayed. You may also include featured image thumbnails, excerpts, and other details. Display posts shortcode may be used in a static front page, but it will not be possible to exactly replicate design elements of a theme’s posts page, nor the design elements of a front page template. As far as I know, you can not display whole posts with Display Posts Shortcode, as they are displayed by default on the posts page with many themes.

    3. Alter the Publish Date — The Show your Posts in Chronological Order support page says:

Manually adjust the publish date on your posts before you publish them to set the order you want them to display. If your posts have already been published, you can edit them and adjust the publish date. This option might be fine if you don’t have large amount of already-published posts. Otherwise, one of the other options listed is likely going to be an easier option for you.

This is the option I previously mentioned. While it may be the most difficult option of the four to implement if you have a lot of posts to modify, it is the only option among the first three that directly involves changing the order of posts displayed on the posts page. The first and second options don’t change the order of posts on the posts page. They are workarounds that involve either a custom menu (or something similar), or the use of shortcode, the implementation of which will inevitably eliminate many design elements of a theme. The fourth option is irrelevant (see below).

    4. Create a Book-Like Structure — The Write a Book support page is a guide that includes step by step instructions toward producing a book-like effect, where posts are arranged in chapters. This option is irrelevant to your case.

    Correction:
In the previous post, under the item #3, I said,

…the use of shortcode, the implementation of which will inevitably eliminate many design elements of a theme.

It’s not inevitable that Display Posts shortcode in a static page will eliminate many design elements of a theme’s posts page, or compare poorly to a homepage or showcase template, but it’s very likely. How much it eliminates, or fails to replicate, will vary depending upon the theme.
