How to always open preview in new tab?

A week or so ago the block editor preview button would open a preview overlay, which is not very useful for the way I write. Then a few days ago the old behaviour of showing the preview in a new tab came back. (Maybe I was editing an already published post? I don’t think so, but it’s possible.) And today the unhelpful popover behaviour is back.

Is there some way to always show preview in a new tab? I can’t find any settings relevant to this in the editor.

In case it’s relevant, I only ever use the code editor, because the markup generated by the visual editor is bad.

  • Hi there,

There is no setting to always open the preview in a new tab. If you prefer to open the preview in a new tab, right-click the button, and select the option to open in a new tab from your browser’s context menu.

No, that doesn’t work. When previewing an unpublished article in this way I just get a 404 page (e.g., https://paperless.blog/?p=2501). When previewing a published article in this way (e.g., https://paperless.blog/2020/10/13/we-need-programming-mentors/?preview_id=2499&preview_nonce=%5Bredacted%5D&preview=true) it shows the actual article as published, not the text as edited. So it’s broken either way.

  • Hm, that’s odd, I’m not able to reproduce this on my test site. Opening the preview in the new tab works regardless if the post was published or not. WHat browser do you use?

Also, remember that with your plan you can access support directly from https://wordpress.com/help/contact.

    I’m using Firefox on Linux.

  • Hmmm… I tried this on Firefox on my end (MacOS) and did not see the same issue. I recorded a video here: https://d.pr/v/v2ffWx

In my video you can see that if I preview the page (which is already published) it shows my recent edits in the preview mode. Do I see something different from what you see?

Also I see you mentioned this:

In case it’s relevant, I only ever use the code editor, because the markup generated by the visual editor is bad.

Is it the case that you are using the editor in wp-admin instead of the one in the WordPress.com dashboard? There is not a “code editor” view in the block editor the same as you find in the classic editor. Are you using that editor instead of the block editor?

Or do you mean you are using the block editor, but using it in the “code editor mode” where you can see the block markup?

    Thanks for the additional info!
