How to assign the Home landing page properly, and…

  • Unknown's avatar

OK, I’ve had some great help from some wonderful people today, learned a LOT, and really appreciate it. But I just have a couple more brief questions.

My entry page is currently set up as:
    https://universalindividualrightsproject.home.blog/
But THEN, someone has to click on the Home Category in the top navbar menu, to actually see what I would LIKE to have as the main site landing page:
    https://universalindividualrightsproject.home.blog/category/home/

So how can I set that up, so that when someone enters my blog for the first time and clicks that top link on a search engine, for example, they go right to the Home category page to read the start off messages there?

The other thing is that I’d like to make the font size smaller on the
Category: Home, and other top page labels, so it’s not overwhelming the rest of the page, but Fonts doesn’t appear to do that. How, please?

    Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, things tend to be slower in the forums on the weekends.

Your “Home” page can be reached by clicking on the title of your site https://universalindividualrightsproject.home.blog/ You probably don’t want the first page of your site to be a Category page.

By default the front page of a website displays your blog posts, but if you want your home page to be a static front page instead of your blog posts, you can set that up in the Customizer. First create and publish a Page with the content you want to appear as your site’s front page. Then open the Customizer and in the HOMEPAGE settings tab, click on “a Static Page” and select the page you published. Click the blue Publish button at the top to make those changes live on your site.

    Set the Homepage

    Customizer

Regarding the Fonts, the options are listed under Fonts in the Customizer. Once you pick a different font from the default fonts, you’ll be able to select the size of the font. Observe carefully where that change is applied on your site/theme in the Customizer, as some thing may change in places you may not want changed. The only way to refine where fonts are changed is by upgrading to the Premium or Business plan that allows you to change your theme’s CSS.

    Change Your Site’s Fonts

Hope that helps but let us know if you have any other question about this after reading those support guides.

Hi Jennifer. Well if you look at

    https://universalindividualrightsproject.home.blog/category/home/

that’s what I want people to come into, when they click on

    https://universalindividualrightsproject.home.blog

So that they just see the two introductory posts there, when they come to
    https://universalindividualrightsproject.home.blog

    Am I describing this right?

Hello again. The default behavior (which you can’t change) of every theme header on WordPressdotcom is to link to the site’s front/home page. In your case that is https://universalindividualrightsproject.home.blog/ Right now when anyone clicks on your site’s header, they land on a blank Page titled “Home”

If the information in those two blog posts on your Home category page is static information, then copy that information and re-publish it as your static front Page. Then change the Homepage setting in the Customizer as I mentioned above, as well as change the URL of the Home link in your site’s Custom Menu.

I see that you have other Pages that you have published as category pages, like what-is-universal-individual-rights-project. Here again, are these pages static (i.e. is this a static “About” page) or will you be adding more blog posts to that category page?

You may find that studying the posts-vs-pages support guide and the learn.wordpress.com tutorial will help you better understand the underpinnings of how the WordPressdotcom platform works. And, of course, the community forums are here as well if you have questions about them.

    Understand that.

Jennifer, I’m sorry, but I just started into this, a few days ago, so do not totally understand what you’re saying, yet. I understand that I can copy those two posts to the front entry page, which I THINK I have set as static. ( don’t fully understand what static is )

I don’t understand what you’re saying with: “Then change the Homepage setting in the Customizer as I mentioned above, as well as change the URL of the Home link in your site’s Custom Menu.””

The two category pages are ones that I’ll be adding to all the time, and I already have with the Commentary page. I think those are set right, because I can keep adding to the Commentary one, just by checking that the post should appear there. But I still don’t fully understand what static means.

Hello again, information in Pages, like the About Page and a Contact Page, doesn’t really change very much and are, therefore, static/unchanging.

If you want your site visitors to always see the information in those same two posts when they land at https://universalindividualrightsproject.home.blog/ then you want a static front page. It’s static is because that information is mostly unchanging, whereas the blog posts page (the default when you first set up a theme) is dynamic and changes each time you publish a new post. Here again is the link to our support guide on setting up a static front page https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

Your navigation Menu currently has a link to a category page as your HOME page. If you decide to change your HOME page to that static front page, you’ll also need to change your navigation menu as a result.

You are doing fine, and it takes time to understand all the concepts, but I do recommend working through the support guides and tutorial I linked to earlier, which explain how to work with your WordPressdotcom site.

I think I have the menu structured correctly now. I removed the Home page as a Category and set up a Home as a Static.

But I don’t know how to get those two home page posts onto it now.

  • Hi there,

There’s a concept of sticky post which you can use for those two posts to show up on your front page.
Go to the specific post from My sites > Blog Posts > (click on the specific post) > in the right sidebar check the box which says stick to the front page.

Check out the link below. It has a nice description about it with screenshots.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/post-visibility/#sticky-posts

Please write back if you have any questions.
    Hope this helps!

Hi there staff-arya. If you read through this admittedly long thread, I’ve been trying to help @kirasaoirseuirp set up a static front page on their site. So the use of a sticky post would not be relevant here. Thanks in any case.

@kirasaoirseuirp it looks like you have the front page set up. :) Now you need to copy/paste the content from those two posts by opening the posts for editing in your dashboard, copy the content and paste it into the Page you have designated as your HOME Page. Make sure to click Update so everything is published.

Let me know how that goes.

  • @justjennifer, My bad! I missed some points there. :)
    Thanks for correcting me though!

Jennifer, it’s apparently not as simple as just copying and pasting now. I did it once before, when things were configured differently, but cant do it now.

This is taking me weeks of struggle to set up, and is getting very discouraging.

OK, I finally got it worked out. It took about an hour. It could still use a little space between posts on the Home page, but I don’t know how to add that.

Hello again, you’ve done great so far especially for someone just starting out.

Working with your site will get easier over time. Make sure to work through the tutorial at https://learn.wordpress.com/ Many things will become clearer once you’ve done that.

Cheers and best wishes for your site.

Thanks to both of you, for your help! :-)

I think some of this may get better, when I upgrade. I’m just waiting to get a decent number of readers.

We’re hoping that this could eventually be monetized and help fund the project, so that we can spread the word that everyone in the world has legitimate rights – not just Americans.
