HOW TO: attaching Word Document and News Articles to webpage

Good evening, I am creating a free website for school and I am using the Pique design. I need to attach my school project Word Document to my page. I want to just put somewhere a title of :Recommended reading and then a link with the document.
Also I have a news article that I want to attach also so folks can click on an image and read it.
If someone can please give me step by step. I have searched the internet high and low and I am just not understanding. Dumb it down for me please

Uploading documents

If you want to embed the document itself into a post, then you will have to use a third party application like Scribd or Google Docs.

Create a text widget with the image in it and link to the image in it.
