How to auto-feed only the most recent post on front page in Edin theme
-
Hi. I am using the Edin theme and the Front Page option on my blog at thesourdoughjournals.com.
I would like to show the most recent post on the Front Page in the middle section, but I don’t want to use the “blog” page because it shows five posts.
I tried limiting the feed to one post, but that becomes a problem whenever anyone clicks on a category or search, where I DO want the five posts to show.
Is there a workaround where the most recent post can feed into that section on the front page, along with its featured image, but no other posts?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Kathryn,
I see that the Blog page is not in your Menu. Do you still need help with this?

Yes, I do. Thank you for responding. Perhaps I did not make my request clear? Do I need to re-phrase?

Thank you, Grace, for getting back to me. Naturally, I love your name!
I am looking for a way to have my latest blog post automatically feed into the middle block of my front page, where “Recipes” now sits.
I don’t want a list of recent posts, but the single most recent one, with the excerpt, the featured image, and the “Read more” button.
I had the “blog” page in there, but I had to choose between showing just 1 post or multiple posts, which is problematic.
Changing that setting to 1, of course, changes it everywhere the blog feeds, including category and tag pages. It’s unpleasant to pull up a search and get only one title, along with an “Older posts” button, which then pulls up only one title and again the “Older posts” button, and on and on.
I need the blog lists to show at least 5 posts, but I want to auto-feed just the most recent post to that middle spot on the front page.
Is there a way to do that?

Thank you!

So unfortunately, this wouldn’t be possible as the theme was designed to only show child pages in that grid format, not posts.
The support guide for the theme states it here:
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/edin/
The Grid Page Template displays all child pages of the page in a grid format.

You can set your blog/category pages to show 5 posts by going to Settings > Reading in your Dashboard, but unfortunately we would be able to feed the latest post in the grid as that would go beyond the design of the theme.

Okay, thank you. I appreciate your time.
I had hopes there might be a workaround. Back to hunting for a theme that looks and feels just right.

Sounds good. Take a look at the theme support guide to get a better idea of the possibilities within that theme.
Cheers!

Thank you again, Grace. You have no way of knowing this, but I do exhaust every option I can think of before posting questions here.
Please be assured, I read the theme guide, and read it again before coming here.
I was hoping there might be something outside the theme that would work–a shortcode, perhaps (looked at the shortcodes page–didn’t find one that looked promising), or some HTML that would do the trick. Searched for that too.
It was only after that I decided to ask the experts. I understand now that there is no possibility, at least for someone at my level, to work around this.
One of these days, perhaps, I will understand CSS enough to make purchasing the upgrade worthwhile. Until then, I’ll keep searching for themes that meet my needs.
Thanks again for your assistance.
