How to avoid automatic line breaks?

WordPress adds line breaks when publishing, and I wonder why. It does that only with Posts, not with Pages, as far as I could observe.
    1) I would look up my post before publishing if there are no double line breaks.
    2) I publish the post.
    3) There are one or two double line breaks (huge white spaces) added automatically.
    4) I go back and take them out and publish again.
    5) Then it’s fine.

Why does that happen? What should I be looking for before publishing?
    Thanks.

Additional observation right now with my post ‘The Power of Myth.’

There were four double line breaks, each and every time after a quotation. Now I looked at the code and see the symbol for a forced line return.

I cannot quote it here for it would be stripped off my post, so let me spell it out: ampersand nbsp semicolon

Once I took out this code in all four instances, all worked fine. Why does this happen?
