How to Avoid Random Cropping
-
Is there a Free photography theme that does not randomly crop your photographs?
Whether it be a Featured Image or a Thumbnail is there a theme that retains the aspect ratio of a photograph?
I am looking to change from Motif to another theme where my images will not be randomly cropped.
Any help would be kindly appreciated.

It is my understanding, after reading other articles on the subject of cropping, that an image aspect ratio will not be sustained when the image is displayed as a Featured Image or a Thumbnail.
I believe but am not 100% sure that a Full-Size Image (with no cropping) may be possible by using Galleries.
From my original photographs of 5184 px x 3456 px (Aspect Ratio 3:2) I generally print at 3 main aspect ratios:
1. 3600 px x 2400 px (3:2)
2. 4000 px x 3200 px (5:4)
3. 3200 px x 4000 px (4:5)Is there a theme that accepts any of the above aspect ratios?

Hi @johnbrennanlive!
Each theme handles featured images differently depending on where they are shown, and if it’s in a section that uses a specific aspect ratio of it’s own.
It does look like you have switched to the Visual theme – did you still need help with this? :)

Thank you for your reply Chad. I am all good now. The aspect ratio is not altered in any way by using Gallery Slideshow in the Visual theme.
I guess no matter what theme you use, the Gallery Slideshow will return uploaded aspect ratios.
Thank you for your help.
Cheers

You’re welcome! And yes, the gallery slideshow will maintain your image’s aspect ratio :)

I have now gone back to motif theme because visual theme did not have a GRID PATTERN option.
All seems to be working OK and the Aspect Ratio on motif theme seems to be in tact.
It’s only when I have included a featured image that the aspect ratio is all messed up. So I have been avoiding featured images.
I have to use them, however, in my short stories so that readers can click on them and be directed to a permalink.

I see the Short Stories page – the images in that grid are displayed at 344×233 – for the best results, you’ll want to use an image with that same width-to-height ratio.
The recommended width of Featured Images on Motif is 1140px, so an 1140×796 image should work well on your Grid Page :)

Hi Chad,
Thank you kindly for your reply on the other closed topic.
Chad, the link above relates to a slightly different query about Featured Images. Kathryn provided me with all the pre-set image sizes in Motif, taken directly from the theme’s functions.php file:
I understand that Featured Images are cropped, so now I avoid them.
That matter is now closed.Yesterday, I removed all of my images and re-posted almost all.
I inserted 2 sizes:
1. 900px x 600px @300dpi
2. 900px x 720px @300dpiThey seem to appear OK using the default template.
I have not attempted the full-width template.I think that I am all good now unless you consider that a 900 x 600 is too small for the full-width template.
-
It looks like the full width template extends to 1072px wide, so there will be some extra room with a 900px wide image. :)
