How to backup media files?
-
I have a backup (Export) but that’s just the text. How to backup the images, and get the links to work if I set up the blog again? There seems no bulk export function in the media library, and rather too many files to copy out individually.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The media files including images are attachments. After you create an XML export file of your content and you import it you will be prompted and you can answer yes to do you want to include attachments.

OK, thanks for that – let me explain further. I want to delete my blog BUT before I do that it would be prudent to back up the content somewhere. When I delete the site, I presume the media files are deleted, yes? Then if I ever get asked a question about content sometime in the future I need to be able to reconstruct the blog from the backup. How do I preserve the media files and ensure the links work properly? Maybe I – or someone else – wants to restart the blog in a few years time – how feasible is that?

I would make the site private. However, typed modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for a Staff response. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question Then please subscribe to this thread so you are notified when they respond. Correct. There isn’t a way to download your media files in bulk at the moment.
There are a few workarounds:
– set the site to private instead of deleting it
– before deleting, import the site into a separate private WordPress.com site and make sure all image paths point to the new site, or import to a localhost install of WordPress on your own computer, or a remote self-hosted site. (Mac or Windows) -
Thanks for that useful reply kathrynwp! I’ve parked in in the ‘private’ category for the time being.
I don’t want to go to the trouble of setting up my own WP system here; it’s just a pity that the media is left floating when I try to backup the whole site. -

@kathrynwp
No problem and thanks for providing the other option. I have bookmarked this thread. :)
