How to BETTER edit a gallery block (drag and drop)

I’ve inserted several gallery blocks into my website. Note, this is not by adding a gallery to a blog post, the gallery blocks are on the webpages.

When trying to edit the order of the images in the gallery, by clicking ‘Media Library’ at the bottom I was able to see all the images in the gallery and drag and drop them into the order that I wanted. I was only able to do this ONCE and would like to know how I find it again.

Normally I can only change the order of images using the arrows that appear when you hover over an image (far too tedious for an art portfolio website with tens to hundreds of pictures) or by COMPLETELY restarting the gallery in the Media Library and uploading the images in the order you want them to appear. Finally, when in media library, if I hit ‘edit’ it only lets me edit one image at a time’s title and description. That is not what I’m looking for.

How do you use the drag and drop feature?

  • Hi there!

I’m not aware of any way to reorder images by dragging and dropping them, currently, it’s only possible using the arrows on each photo.
When creating the gallery you’ll either need to click on the images in the order you want them added to reorder them later on with the arrows.
You mention you were able to drag and drop them once, I wonder, which block did you use then?
Also, what’s the address of the site you’re working on?

    Hi folks,

If you use the Classic Block to create a gallery, rather than using one of the gallery blocks, then you may reorder images in a gallery both before and after it is inserted into a post or page editor.

In the Classic Block, clicking the “Add Media” icon in the toolbar takes you directly to the media library. If you select from the media library, or add (via URL or external files), more than one image, then the “Insert” option at the bottom of the media library module changes to a “Continue” button. Clicking that button leads to creation of a gallery, which you may edit before insertion (in the untitled module created by clicking the “Continue” button), or after the gallery is inserted into the editor window.

While there’s nothing particularly difficult about the procedure I’ve outlined above, it’s certainly less simple and direct than the corresponding procedure in the WP-Admin editor, for a number of reasons.

Sorry, I failed to mention that reordering by drag & drop is available in the procedure I’ve outlined above, both before and after insertion of the gallery. That was my whole point.

Thank you! I’ll try that out and see if it works for my needs.

You’re welcome! I thought that maybe you had been in the classic block without knowing it that one time you previously reordered images by drag & drop in the block editor.
