How To Block Blogs
-
At one time I saw a button somewhere that would allow me to BLOCK a blog. But now I cannot figure out where I saw this button or how to get to it. My searches for blog blocking have led me nowhere. Thanks for any help.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’ve never heard of it. Blocking them from what, your reader? Just don’t Follow them in the first place. Tag pages? You don’t have any control over those.

I’m not sure what the blocking does. I just assumed it would block the blog from finding or following me. But maybe that’s not possible. I think I’ve encountered a few spam bloggers out there and I’m not sure how they operate, but I wanted them to stay away from me. I’ve opened a blog or two and suddenly my computer starts wigging out. Once I figure out where I saw this block button, I will put it on this forum and maybe someone can tell me what it’s used for. Thanks for responding anyway.

That’s not possible unless you make the blog private. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/ Anyone can follow a public blog by simply subscribing to the RSS Feed.

Thanks for the info. I did find the button though. It’s on the reader at the bottom left hand side there’s a drop-down arrow under the name of anyone’s blog. The top option on the drop-down says “BLOCK THIS BLOG”. This applies to the blogs I am following AND to blogs I am NOT following. So what exactly does this do if I were to click this button for a particular blog and I’m not following it? Is it just blocking it from appearing in my personal reader and that’s it? Thanks.

Oh, that’s interesting. Yes, it should block it from your reading the tag pages, etc via the Reader. I know that feature has been requested for years, but was unaware that they’d actually done it.

Once anyone finds out, please let me know. I’d like to block blogs that I think are spam but I’m not sure what this button actually does. I would assume it keeps a blog from being able to find your blog in the first place but I could be wrong. And if there is an option to block blogs I would assume WordPress would have something explaining what this does. But when I do a search on WordPress Support for “blocking blogs”, nothing comes up about this at all. Just fyi if someone could let STAFF know so I can get clarification or put a paragraph on the support page about it so we know what it is used for. Thanks for any help.

If you find a spam blog, use the Report as spam button on the grey admin bar to report it. That doesn’t just block it; it flags it for staff review and possible suspension.

Thanks! It’s hard for me to tell what a spam blog looks like. I assume it would be a blog that goes crazy when you try to open it or the blogs with names of a bunch of consonants thrown together (xtrpqw). But that’s just a guess on my part. Thanks for the info.

See here for how to detect a splog (spam blog)

I am just trying to verify what blocking a blog in the reader does. I would like to periodically look at posts that have been tagged Nature in my reader without necessarily subscribing to dozens of new blogs. The tag would be more fun for me if I could screen out blogs that aren’t personally interesting to me. But I don’t want to block a blog if it in anyway reflects badly on the blog. I would just like to refine what I see in the reader using this tag so that it matches my interests better.

I thought that if I blocked a particular blog, that blog would no longer appeared when I viewed posts that had been tagged Nature and hence was filtered out of the stream that I would be viewing.

Hey all – the “block this blog” option blocks the blog from appearing in your reader at all. If you were following the blog, it also unsubscribes you. But it doesn’t block that blog from following you.
I hope this clears it up!

I also assume this is redundant as I would assume you could just as easily UNFOLLOW a blog and that would prevent it from appearing in the reader. This is why I think there was confusion to begin with.

Hi there – You’re correct, but the ‘block this blog’ option also keeps it from showing up when you’re browsing the Reader Topic pages of blogs you don’t follow.
