How to block spam from a particular origin

A very large proportion of my spam comes from “Best Dating Sites” – probably 30-40% of the daily load of 200-300 spams. It would be helpful if I didn’t have to deal with these spams at all. I go though my spam every day because occasionally there are legitimate comments, but all these “Best Dating Sites” spams are a real pain. I don’t want to automatically mark them as spam – I want them to be blocked completely in the first place. Can this be done?

    Hi there,

The strictest way to handle spam at WordPress.com is to add details about the comments to your comment blacklist — however, that automatically marks them as spam rather than completely blocking them. Because we don’t want to accidentally block real comments on your site, we don’t have a way to block spam comments without listing them in the spam filter for you to review.

That said, there are other ways to help cut down on spam comments. Many spam comments come in on old posts, whereas most real comments come in on your latest posts. I’d recommend automatically closing comments on your blog’s older posts to help cut down on the spam that comes in.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that!

Hi rachelmcr – GREAT suggestion! I will go through my older posts and close comments. There are two or three that seem to get the most spam. Maybe I’ll edit the older posts and add a suggestion at the end that if someone wants to comment they can go to my latest post and comment there. Thank you very much. You have just saved me many unproductive hours.

You’re very welcome! :) It’s a great idea to add a note on your older posts directing visitors to posts where the comments are open — especially since spambots won’t be able to read and understand a note like that.

    Happy blogging!
