If you’re talking about a WordPress.com site you’ve already set up it’s easy to make it into a test site you can experiment with by clicking on “My Site”, scroll down on the left to “Settings” and scroll down on the right to click “Private”.

If you mean you want to create an additional site to the one you already have then follow the instructions in this support doc (that new site can be set to private too of course):-

I want to change the Theme to something a little more update but cannot afford to loose the active site I have now. Are you saying I can build a complete new site and go in and out of it to make adjustments as long as I do as you say in your reply to my cry for help? Simply follow the link /Create-a-blog please? Apologies if I appear a bit thick but I am still trying to learn WP.
    Thanks,

Yes Ron, click on the link above and the second option should do it:-

“Adding a New Site or Blog to an Existing Account”.

I’m offline now until tomorrow but I’m sure there are plenty of other people here in the forums to help if you get stuck. You (and I) are never too old to learn something new………

Good evening, I did as you suggested but when I got to settings all I had were the following:- General-writing-Reading-Discussion-Media-Permalinks-Tinymice. On the Dashboard I saw Theme and clicked on the and found a new theme (Longevity” that would do the job. I activated it and found all the info from my current site in place on its front page. Not being able to find “Private” I closed it down as I didn’t want to mess up what I already have. It’s a pity I cannot send you a screen shot so you will see how things look. I will go back into the theme > Settings and have another look. Unfortunately I have to go out this evening so will not be here to answer any of your replies will be about tomorrow during the day.
    Cheers,

    @ronbin80

What is the URL starting with http:// of the exact site you refer to?

On the Dashboard I saw Theme and clicked on the and found a new theme (Longevity

That theme is not found here at wordpress.COM and that means you have been posting to the wrong support forum for your software. See here https://wordpress.org/themes/longevity/

That site is not on our servers.

We provide support only for wordpress.COM hosted sites. Our support docs do not apply to
    (1) local installs of wordpress.ORG software on your own server or
    (2) wordpress.ORG software installs on paid hosting, and we do not provide support for them at wordpress.COM.

Also, note that we do not provide Jetpack support https://jetpack.com/support/ for sites linked to wordpress.COM accounts with the Jetpack plugin so they display on the My Sites wordpress.com account page.

Some Jetpack solutions are here http://jetpack.com/support/

Others are in the Jetpack support forum at WordPress.org
    http://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpack

However, if help cannot be found at either one then they can file a Jetpack support ticket here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/?jetpack=needs-service

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

As you are referring to a site that is not hosted here, if you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right-hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.
    Resetting your WordPress.ORG password http://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password
WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page

@ ronbin80 You administer a WordPress.com site AND a WordPress.org site. Please be very clear which is which. To follow the instructions here https://en.support.wordpress.com/create-a-blog/ you have to be logged in to your WordPress.com account if you want to add an additional test site (that you can make private) to play about with. When correctly logged in you click here https://wordpress.com/start But…big but… if you’re wanting to use it to experiment with things for the WordPress.org site it may help or it could just confuse you even more as there are a number of differences between the two similar sounding platforms.

    Gentlemen,
Thank you for your help. At present I administer http://ifieldpairish.org, which is the site I would like to change and use Longevity in the process. The Ifield Parish web site is the only one I look after.

Just to make sure I have got the facts right, whilst I do have a password and a user name for wordpress.org I also have a the same for wordpress.com. That aside, what I should be doing is asking for support from http://www.wordpress.org/support. I don’t think I can be confused much more than I am already. Hopefully I have got it right now and if I want to alter the http://www.ifieldparish.org site, I have to log in to http://www.wordpress.org and work from there.
I do apologies for causing havoc and confusion and will do my best to avoid a repeat performance. A big thank you for all your help and appreciate all you have done to help.
    Regards,
    ronbin85
