How to build a password protected site (with no WordPress account)?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to build a password protected site where each user is essentially a member and given an invitation, user name and password to access the site, as the content on the site is private to this group. I don’t want people to have to sign up for a WordPress account in order to access the site. I can’t see a way to do that without having a hosted site. Am I missing something?

Thanks so much for your help.

If you want your blog completely private, your readers will need a WordPress.com account in order to log in. The only other option is to password protect each post, and then give the password to each reader.

Is there any way to make the blog completely private without a WP account and/or password protecting each blog page? I remember member area plugins from previous work that I did but maybe it was with hosted WP?

  • Yes, the only way to make a blog private here would be to only allow approved users access or password protect each post. The users must be WordPress.com users before they can be added to your approved users list.

If I transfer to WordPress.org and install a membership area plugin (i.e. WP Member), should that do what I’m trying to accomplish?

(I need to make a password protected, secure WP site. Content is internal training materials for company, so it should be available only to people who I invite and/or approve. I should be able to turn off access when people leave the company. I don’t want people to have to sign up for WP to login, login/registration needs to be VERY simple.)

  • Yes, that would work for what you’re looking to do.
