How to cancel domain and get refund?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I bought a domain through wordpress.com, not knowing that I actually needed to buy a *wordpress.org* domain.

I bought my wordpress.com domain literally hours ago, so is there any way I can return it and get a refund? I’ve tried canceling it on my upgrades page, but it says I need to go to Support and request deletion. However, when I go to the support page, it tells me to go to my upgrades. So basically, I’m caught in a loop, and I’m incredibly lost.

    Thank you!

Hello I recently bought some upgrades on here and then cancelled them. I received a refund for everything except for going to WordPress premium $79. Can u please take a look at that and let me know why.

@luckystar1900- I’m not clear what you mean by needing to buy a *wordpress.org* domain. A domain is a domain regardless of where you host your website.

Cancelling a domain means you lose control of it and there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to repurchase it some place else afterwards.

So rather than cancel the domain, you can manage the domain you bought here and then, after the 60-day ICANN requirement for new domains passes, you can transfer the domain to a different registrar if you want, but it really isn’t necessary. You can keep and manage your domain purchased through WordPressdotcom here and point it to wherever you decide to set up your website. It’s up to you.

@hachemga – posting into an unrelated thread won’t get your issue the attention it deserves. Please open a separate thread for it here: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1

Sorry about that, I’ll try to clarify. I bought a domain through WordPress, so it’s hosted by WordPress. I didn’t realize that what I actually needed to do is buy a domain that’s hosted by somebody else (like bluehost) and connect it to my WordPress blog. So basically, I didn’t know there was a big difference between WordPress.com vs WordPress.org. This explains it really well https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

I hope that makes more sense?

    Thank you!

    Hi again-

The site you linked to above is currently hosted on WordPressdotcom, regardless of its having a custom domain name.

If you would rather set up a website using the standalone WordPress software (.org) on an external webhost (like BlueHost), but want to use the custom domain name that you purchased from WordPressdotcom on that website, see again my above post about not cancelling the custom domain name you bought from WordPressdotcom.

You can continue to manage your custom domain name from your WordPressdotcom domain manager and point the DNS pointers to your self-hosted WordPress website. Here’s a bit more on that:

    Hope that is clearer!
