Hi there!
If you cancel the domain nmoleosoftware.com, it will not be available to register elsewhere. If you intend to continue using it, you should not cancel it.
You can still map your domain to another web host by changing its name servers:
You’ve owned that domain for 51 days. Once you’ve owned it for 60 days (per ICANN regulations) you can transfer the domain to another registrar if you wish.

Also, if I transfer my domain, will people still be able to visit my site at nmoleosoftware.wordpress.com?

Looking at Heroku’s documentation, I cannot tell if they will act as a domain registrar at all. As I read their support articles it appears they assume their users will setup their DNS elsewhere. You’ll need to contact their support to find out if they’ll act as registrar for an incoming domain transfer. If they do, then yes you can initiate that transfer in 9 days.
However, you can follow these steps…
https://devcenter.heroku.com/articles/custom-domains
…and change the DNS settings for your domain to point to Heroku right now.
Also, if I transfer my domain, will people still be able to visit my site at nmoleosoftware.wordpress.com?
Yes, even without the custom domain your free WordPress.com will still be available at that address.
Best,
-Alex G.
