How to Cancel Two-step Authentification

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve received an email saying that Two Step Authentication was enabled on my blog. Actually, I’ve STOPPED this process before the end when I was informed that I have to print a list of 10 numeric passwords to remember (or to remember where I’ve stored that page). I already have so many different passwords to remember that the last thing that I want is to complicated my life even more.

So I’d like to wait until you have a better solution (like the one used by iTunes or YouTube, which is a lot easier)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi Jean-Pierre,

The numeric codes are only backup codes that could be used in the event your phone is lost or destroyed.

The backup codes would be the only way to access your account if your phone is lost or destroyed, so we provide that option to enable continued access to your account without having to go through a separate process to re-enable access. You wouldn’t need to use them on a regular basis (or quite frankly, possibly ever. Better safe than sorry, though).

You can disable Two-Step Authentication by visiting http://wordpress.com/settings/security/

    Cheers!

Can you be more precise ? That link only bring me to the “My blogs” page. What do I go from there ?

  • Hi,

That link should directly take you to the Security settings. If not, hover over your picture at the top-right, and go to Settings. Then, click on the Security link on the right side.

    Thanks!

This doesn’t work. CAN YOU DO IT FOR ME ?

You implementation if this Authentification code is full of bugs. This is a four step process: I’ve quit that process at the third step, when I realized that I would be unable to access my blog during my vacation: I never bring my cell phone abroad. Even if I’ve quit before, I’m stuck with it.

The Authentification code received by SMS stops to be valid as soon as we close our browser. So we need a new one each time we go back to our site. I can’t pass my days asking for codes.

As soon as I went to my settings to cancel the Authentification code, I’m brought at the beginning of that 4-step process. If we don’t pass through it (because we absolutely don’t want it) and quit WordPress, that new setting (no Authentification code) is not set. We’re still stuck with that (%?$##%) Authentification code.

Moreover, clicking the link to get a new Authentification code by SMS doesn’t always work. After trying about seven times, it finally worked, a few minutes ago. So I’m able to write to you but I don’t know when I’ll be able to ask for help again. So can you disable Authentification code on my blog, please.

  • Hi Jean-Pierre,

As a security measure, we can’t disable it for you. The authentication system has been in place for over a year; only recently started promoting it more. I appreciate your patience as we work to determine if there is a bug not previously seen.

Can you use the application initially registered with, instead of SMS. Each time you log on, the code is needed, but generally, you shouldn’t need to login each time, unless your browser isn’t keeping the cookie as long as expected.

When visiting the link at http://wordpress.com/security/settings/ , can you tell me which part of this process fails for you?
First, click the Disable link: https://cloudup.com/cUcnvqYyogp
A section will appear asking you to enter a code from your application: https://cloudup.com/cv3NWIkZljy
After verifying the code, the initial prompt is provided: https://cloudup.com/cbcrKeyQ4nC
Two-Step is deactivated and you can move away.

I’ll also send you an e-mail so we can talk that way if you have further trouble.

Google Chrome keeps my password for a while but absolutely don’t remember the Authentification codes. So I have to ask for it each time I go back on the Internet.

“First, click the Disable link: https://cloudup.com/cUcnvqYyogp A section will appear asking you to enter a code from your application: https://cloudup.com/cv3NWIkZljy After verifying the code, the initial prompt is provided: https://cloudup.com/cbcrKeyQ4nC Two-Step is deactivated and you can move away.”

No it doesn’t work. I’ve tried twice.

  • Hi Jean-Pierre,

Can you provide more detail on how it doesn’t work? Does each step in the process proceed as I indicated as expected?

At which step does something different happen?
