how to change a blog URL

I’m trying to change my blog URL from bratwurstforbreakfast.wordpress.com to myswisspics.com. Is it true that I have to pay $26/year to do this? Once I’ve paid the $26 will my blog be discoverable by searching “myswisspics”?
Will the bratwurstforbreakfast URL still be tied to my blog or will this be the equivalent of starting over again with the myswisspics URL? If the former, should I in fact just start a new blog with the URL I want?

Hi there. If you register your domain directly through WordPress.com prices start from $18 a year (depending on which extension you choose) plus $8 a year to keep your registration details private (optional), giving the $26 amount.

Search engines do look at your domain name, but also at your blog title, tagline and keywords in your post titles and content. You will experience a drop in search engine rankings for a few weeks as search engines re-index your site, but things should return to normal after a while.

Your blog will technically still be at the WordPress.com address, but when people visit your blog they will see the custom address in their browser address bar. All URLs of your existing posts and pages are automatically redirected to the new custom address. Do not delete the WordPress.com address, as that’s where your blog is hosted. If you delete something there it’s gone.
Also keep in mind you’ll still be hosted by WordPress.com, so the same terms of service you agreed to with your free blog still applies, including the restrictions on advertising. See: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

Thanks for the quick response.
I just purchased the new domain but my URL is still showing up as bratwurstforbreakfast.wordpress.com. Is there a time lag before the URL will show up as myswisspics.com? Will I be able to use the latter URL to point readers to my blog?

Both URLs take me ty myswisspics.com if I click them so everything appears fine. Your new domain is up and running and it is mapped to your blog.
It can take up to 72 hours for the new domain to become visible across the web, and I’ve seen other people in the forum mention that you’ll probably be the last one to see the change (though I don’t have direct experience on this).
