How to change domain name, but keep the same blog

  • Unknown's avatar

I purchased the plan so I could customize my blog. But I want to change the domain from “priyankainpune” to “thepriyankaozablog,” but keep the same blog. Can I do that? How do I go about it?

I have been fiddling with the settings and cannot seem to figure it out.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi priyankainpune,

If you’re looking for it to be thepriyankaozablog.com, you’ll have to purchase that domain (if you haven’t already) and then map it to your WordPress.com blog. You can have as many domains pointing to your blog at once as you want, but you have to own them first. Here’s some information and instructions on purchasing domains and mapping: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/. Hope that helps – let me know if you have any other questions!

    Hi priyankainpune and Kristin,

Sorry to jump in but I have a question along a similar vein – I have a domain which is coming up for renewal but it’s an old name which I don’t wish to keep. Am I correct in thinking that if I buy a new domain and assign it to the blog then I’ll still have a live domain and blog?

    Thanks

If you want to use a different custom domain than the one you currently have, then you’ll have to register a new custom domain and set that as your primary domain. This is assuming you have a WordPress.com site and not a self-hosted WordPress.org website.

You can keep the old domain as well, so people clicking on links for the old domain can still reach your blog, or you can let it expire/cancel it if you’re sure you no longer want it.

Be aware that a domain change will cause a temporary drop in search engine traffic as search engines will have to re-index your site at the new domain.
