How to change hosting from Godaddy to WordPress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

After 10 years or so of dealing with the misery that is Godaddy culminating in a hijack, I have cancelled my web hosting account there and would like to change my wordpress.com account so it doesn’t point there, but can’t find where to change that info. I’m sure it’s something obvious that I’m missing, but…..

I apologize if this is a scattered and moronic question – I am dealing with about 12 disasters here including a veterinary emergency that has resulted in a mess you’d rather not have described in any detail. Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

See here for moving content https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/

    re: mapping an existing domain
WordPress.com provides free blogs and hosts them free of charge. There are no bandwidth charges. All WordPress.com blogs come with 3000 megabytes (~3 GBs) of space for storing uploaded files and images. Free features are listed here https://en.wordpress.com/features/

See here for details of all 3 plans http://store.wordpress.com/bundles/ offered by WordPress.com.
    Premium bundle details http://store.wordpress.com/plans/premium/
    Business bundle details http://store.wordpress.com/plans/business/

Note that each upgrade bundle applies to a single blog only and is for a single year only when it is due to be renewed.

We all pay in full for every upgrade at the time of purchase. Make sure you read the comparison very closely so you know exactly what the restrictions and limitations on WordPress.COM blogging are: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Read Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it and the domain mapping purchase here every year.

Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually and a domain name purchase and domain mapping are included in the Premium upgrade bundle.

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is. It does not have to match the domain URL.

If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the WordPress.COM blog, and as you own a domain URL already, you can see here for mapping an existing domain. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

It can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

Thank you so much for this excellent and very thorough explanation!

Unfortunately, I already cancelled my godaddy account, they took it down, and I will be starting over again from scratch at the wordpress.com blog I established long ago. My only problem is that my wordpress.com blog redirects to the godaddy site and I just need to change that.

Under the WP Admin Try dashboard > my blogs. There you may be able to change what the address for your WordPress blog is.

Thanks, but no joy. When I log in, I don’t get a choice of “My Blogs.” I get “My Site” which goes to the godaddy site, and “Reader” for blogs I’m following.

The redirect info at the link tells how to redirect from WP to self host, but not the other way around. I’d hate to kill it and lose a blog name I’ve had for so long.

Thanks anyway! I do appreciate the offer to help.

    Hi there,

Right now, the only site linked to your WordPress.com account is the self-hosted site you had at brazenlyliberal.com. (That site appears in your WordPress.com dashboard because it was linked to your account with the Jetpack plugin. However, it isn’t itself a WordPress.com site.)

You can remove that old self-hosted site from your WordPress.com account using the steps in our guide to Disconnect Jetpack Sites.

Then, you can head here to create a new WordPress.com site:

    https://signup.wordpress.com/start/

As part of that process, you’ll choose a free *.wordpress.com address for your site. That’s what we use at WordPress.com to keep your site’s content safe even if you change the custom domain (like brazenlyliberal.com) used on your site.

You can add your domain brazenlyliberal.com to your site as you set it up, or you can create the site first and go to the Domains page later on to add brazenlyliberal.com to it. That way, you can use that domain name with your new WordPress.com site. (It will replace the free *.wordpress.com address you chose for your site so visitors only see your custom domain name.)

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

YES! Thank you! Complete success and in the next few days I will find time to figure out how to get my domain name out of the clutches of Godaddy. In the meantime, people here have given me more helpful advice in under 24 hours than Godaddy did in 10 years. Amazing.

Thank you all so much again!

You’re welcome! We also have a guide to Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping) that will help get your domain name pointed to your WordPress.com site.

WordPress.com can’t accept incoming domain transfers so you’ll need to keep the domain registered with another domain registrar (either with GoDaddy or another registrar). From there you can point the domain to WordPress.com to use it with your site here.

If there’s anything more I can do to help, please let me know. :)
