How to change my blog name and discontinue the current domain?

How to change my blog name to new and cancel the current domain? I would like to register a new domain with wordpress (registration with domain mapping). Do I register for a new domain first then move the current blog to the new domain and then only cancel the current domain? Or cancel first then apply for a new domain? I’d like keep whatever there is on the current blog, and change it to a new name.

To change a blog URL ending in wordpress.com, please follow these steps. Another alternative is to purchase a custom domain name to take “wordpress” out of the domain altogether.
Canceling a domain means you completely give up ownership of the domain and can take up to 35 days before it will become available to register somewhere. If you would like to completely cancel your ownership of the domain name, please reply to confirm.
If you would like to transfer the domain to another registrar, you can use these steps.

Hi thanks for the quick reply. Yes, i’d like to cancel my ownership of the current domain name: maagha.net.
So should i purchase a custom domain name first to move the blog over, or proceed to cancel the domain first? Please advise.

Your domain (maagha.net) doesn’t expire until 2014-01-22. You can decide to keep the name and set a new domain as your primary domain. This way both domains go to the same site.
Or you can cancel the domain (maagha.net) and only use the new domain.

So will all the existing content be transferred once that is cancelled? -

The home button on my new blog site still directs to the old name, maagha.net. And i noticed that the address of my blog in the dashboard is maaghadotnet.wordpress.com ? Please help!

I’ve gone ahead and updated your menu bar so that your home button went to definingyouruniqueness.com. As for your blog address, yes when you log in it does still go to your old account, however nobody sees that but you. If you’d like to change it anyway, you can find instructions here:

Please note that once you change your address, you’ll never be able to change it back to what it is now for any reason. That name will be lost forever!

Thank you! Yes i’d like to change it anyway as the old name has already been cancelled. The new blog name is a paid domain name, so should it be changed to definingyouruniquenessdotcom.wordpress.com ? i.e. must still carry that .wordpress.com ?

Yes, when you go through the process you’ll see that it will still have to have the .wordpress.com part, as that is how our system functions. It does not necessarily have to have the “dotcom” in it, however. You can just have “definingyouruniqueness” as long as no one else has taken that blog name.
